This is an overview of the selection process for the Certified Police Officer position. All applicants should
familiarize themselves with the process. Applicants must successfully complete the phases required.
In order to ensure the perpetuation of the prestige and reputation of the East Chicago Police Department,
each applicant will compete against other applicants in each step of the selection procedure. Only those
who possess the best mental, physical, moral and emotional fitness for the performance of police duties will
be considered.
A. BASIC ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
All applicants must meet all the following eligibility requirements by the date that your application is
submitted:

Must be United States Citizen.
Must be 21 years of age.
Must be a High School graduate or G.E.D. equivalent. An associate or bachelor’s degree is
desired, but not required.
4. Must not have been convicted of a felony.
5. Must be of good moral character.
6. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
7. Must reside within Lake County or a contiguous county within six (6) months of appointment.
8. Must meet the minimum standards for membership in the 1977 Police Officer’s and
Firefighters Pension Disability Fund.
9. Corrected Vision: Binocular vision no worse than 20/30; worst eye vision 20/100 (with
exception for long-term successful users of soft contact lenses). Color Vision: Candidate
must have ability to identify red, green and yellow - no specific test requirement.
Peripheral Vision: Uncorrected field of vision no worse than 140 degrees in the horizontal
meridian in each eye.
10. Hearing: No hearing deficit in the pure tone threshold (500 hertz, 1,000 hertz, 2,000 hertz
and 3,000 hertz) in the unaided worse ear: (a) of more than 25 decibels in 3 of the 4
frequencies, (b) of more than 30 decibels in frequencies of more than 30 decibels.
10. Must have a satisfactory military discharge (if applicable).
11. Must meet the minimum standards of physical, educational, mental and moral fitness
governing the acceptance of persons for training at any training school or academy under
the jurisdiction of the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board.
B. EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION
Employment application and pre-employment questionnaire may be picked up at the East Chicago
Police Department/Public Safety Building, located at 2301 E. Columbus Dr., East Chicago, Indiana or
download a the application from the City’s website www.eastchicago.com from July 3 - 17, 2013. All
applications must be physically turned by Wednesday, July 17, 2013 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. –
4:00 p.m.

It is important, that you clearly and correctly indicate your mailing address and telephone number.

In the event you change your address or phone number after filing application, mail notification
immediately.
Sign and date the application.
Any further information you wish to add you may use additional plain copy paper.
Applicants must submit the following documents listed below with their application:
a. Copy of Birth Certificate
b. Copy of High School Diploma
c. Copy of High School transcript(s) (In case of G.E.D. Diploma, be sure transcript notes
issuance of diploma.)
d. Copy of College, University or Vocational Diploma(s).
e. Copy of College, University or Vocational transcript(s) showing courses of study and
grades obtained.
f. Proof of military discharge (DD 214), if applicable.
g. Copy of valid driver’s license.
h. Photo of front view, head and shoulder, 2 ½ square inches, in color and taken within past
six months. Photo must be affixed securely to front of application.
i. Copy of Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board / Academy certification.
j. Signed Authorization to Release of Personal Information form.
k. Proof of residency or ties to local affairs.
All transcripts must be sent directly from the school or college to the East Chicago Police
Department’s Department of Human Resources, located at 2301 East Columbus Dr., East Chicago,
IN 46312. Hand Delivered transcripts will not be accepted.
These copies become property of East Chicago Department of Human Resources and are not
subject to return.

Any application turned in incomplete, late, or not containing all the required documents will not be
considered. Application will not be considered until complete in every respect. Incomplete
applications will be considered inactive and destroyed.
9. Check application carefully. Be certain all items are complete before submitting. No exceptions
will be made for anyone not meeting all requirements.
10. Any misrepresentation of facts will disqualify the applicant.
11. Applications must be submitted by the applicant in person to the East Chicago Police Department’s
Department of Human Resources, located at 2301 East Columbus Dr., East Chicago, IN 46312.
NO EXCEPTIONS.
12. Completed applications will only be accepted from Monday through Friday between the hours of
9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

which are given at the expense to the individual applicant.

Notification will be made by mail, phone, or email if you successfully or unsuccessfully completed
each phase.

E. PROBATIONARY PERIOD
During the officer’s first year as a sworn police officer, the officer is on probation and may be
discharged at any time without a formal hearing. Upon satisfactory completion of the probationary
period, the officer may receive a permanent appointment.
If the appointee has not yet undergone formal training at an approved law enforcement academy, the
officer must attend and pass the 18 week Basic Training for Law Enforcement Officers course at the
Indiana Law Enforcement Academy during the probationary period. Failure to pass and be certified by
the Police Academy will result in the officer’s discharge.
F.
GENERAL INFORMATION
1.
Information secured through testing and investigation will be held in strict confidence.
2.
Applicants will be given only one attempt at completing or passing any of the tests in the selection
process.
3.
Applicants who fail to take or fail to pass any of the tests described in the selection process
will be eliminated from further consideration and must start the selection process from the
beginning if he/she reapplies.
4.
The elimination of an applicant at any point in the selection process will not disqualify the
applicant from submitting a new application for competition at a later date.
5.
Applicants are responsible for half (1/2) the cost of the Psychological and Physical Examination.
6.
Please do not make inquiry regarding status of your application, you will receive appropriate
notification concerning your application.
