BASIC ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS All applicants must meet all the following eligibility requirements by the date that your application is submitted: 1. 2. 3. Must be United States Citizen. Must be 21 years of age. Must be a High School graduate or G.E.D. equivalent. An associate or bachelor’s degree is desired, but not required. 4. Must not have been convicted of a felony. 5. Must be of good moral character. 6. Must possess a valid driver’s license. 7. Must reside within Lake County or a contiguous county within six (6) months of appointment. 8. Must meet the minimum standards for membership in the 1977 Police Officer’s and Firefighters Pension Disability Fund. 9. Corrected Vision: Binocular vision no worse than 20/30; worst eye vision 20/100 (with exception for long-term successful users of soft contact lenses). Color Vision: Candidate must have ability to identify red, green and yellow - no specific test requirement. Peripheral Vision: Uncorrected field of vision no worse than 140 degrees in the horizontal meridian in each eye. 10. Hearing: No hearing deficit in the pure tone threshold (500 hertz, 1,000 hertz, 2,000 hertz and 3,000 hertz) in the unaided worse ear: (a) of more than 25 decibels in 3 of the 4 frequencies, (b) of more than 30 decibels in frequencies of more than 30 decibels. 10. Must meet the minimum standards of physical, educational, mental and moral fitness governing the acceptance of persons for training at any training school or academy under the jurisdiction of the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board. Columbus Dr., East Chicago, Indiana or download a the application from the City’s website www.eastchicago.com from July 3 - 17, 2013. E. PROBATIONARY PERIOD During the officer’s first year as a sworn police officer, the officer is on probation and may be discharged at any time without a formal hearing. Upon satisfactory completion of the probationary period, the officer may receive a permanent appointment. If the appointee has not yet undergone formal training at an approved law enforcement academy, the officer must attend and pass the 18 week Basic Training for Law Enforcement Officers course at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy during the probationary period. Failure to pass and be certified by the Police Academy will result in the officer’s discharge. F. GENERAL INFORMATION 1. Information secured through testing and investigation will be held in strict confidence. 2. Applicants will be given only one attempt at completing or passing any of the tests in the selection process. 3. Applicants who fail to take or fail to pass any of the tests described in the selection process will be eliminated from further consideration and must start the selection process from the beginning if he/she reapplies. 4. The elimination of an applicant at any point in the selection process will not disqualify the applicant from submitting a new application for competition at a later date. 5. Applicants are responsible for half (1/2) the cost of the Psychological and Physical Examination. 6.
