Title:
North American Network Access Transmission Model for Evaluating
xDSL Modem Performance : Provisional Scores determination
Project:
Distribution :
PN-4254
Members of TR-30.3 and meeting attendees
Abstract: Draft 6 of PN4254 document that defines the network access transmission model incorporates
two separate network models: One Network Access Model for Single Family Home connections, and one
Network Access Model for Multi-User/Business connections. Considering both Network Access Models,
provisional scores determination is proposed for test loops, connections types, impairments combinations,
home wiring and office building wiring. A first group of tables that provide cross products of impairments
combinations, test loops and home wiring scores are considered for Single Family Home connections. A
second group of tables that provide cross products of impairments combinations, test loops and office
building wiring scores are considered for Multi-User/business connections.

1- TEST LOOPS SELECTION
At Baltimore TR30.3 meeting, Phil Kyees (Paradyne) presented the rationale and Proposal for
Reducing the number of test loops (TR-30.3/99-10-T1E1.4/99-650). This proposal was discussed
and approved. Consequently, The Network Model can be updated considering 24 test loops
instead of 38. These 24 test loops belong to group 1:

In order to define test loop scores, the group 1 can be divided into three categories :
- Category 1 corresponds to loops with a length lower or equal to 9 kft
- Category 2 corresponds to loops with a length higher than 9 kft and lower or equal to 12 kft
- Category 3 corresponds to loops with a length higher than 12 kft.
Test loop scores were provided by Bellcore in 1998 to define the North American Network
Transmission Model for evaluating PCM Modem Performances. Considering Bellcore data, a
preliminary estimation of Test Loop distribution is proposed as follows:
63 % of test loops belong to category 1
27 % of test loops belong to category 2
10 % of test loops belong to category 3

2- CONNECTION CONFIGURATIONS
The Paradyne contribution TR-30.3/99-10-T1E1.4/99-649 provides a Rationale and Proposal for
Reducing the number of connection Configurations. This document was discussed and approved.
Consequently, the Network Model can be updated and illustrated by figures 1, 2 and 3.
Figure 1:Connection Configuration 1 (CPE/CO link)
Figure 2: Connection Configuration 2 (CPE/CO link)
3
Connection type S1 (fig 1) corresponds to a complete link between a DSLAM located in the CO
and a xDSL transceiver located in Single Family Home. The link incorporates both, the telephone
network portion and the Home Wiring portion of the subscriber loop.
Connection type M1 (fig 1) corresponds to a complete link between a DSLAM located in the CO
and a xDSL transceiver located in Multi-unit/Business Premises. The link incorporates both, the
telephone network portion and the Office Building Wiring portion of the subscriber loop.
The telephone network portion of connection types S1 and M1 can be represented by any of the
24 test loops that belong to group 1.
Connection type S2 (fig 2) corresponds to a complete link between a DSLAM located in the CO
and a xDSL transceiver located in Customer Premises. The link incorporates both, the telephone
network portion and the Home Wiring portion of the subscriber loop in case of Single Family
Home. XDSL transmitters located in the RT generate additional FEXT that increases significantly
the interference level at the receiver front end located in the single family home because the
distance between RT and Customer Premises is shorter than distance between CO and
Customer Premises.
Connection type M2 (fig 2) is similar to S2 connection, but the Customer Premises is having
Office Building Wiring configuration.
The telephone network portion of connection types S2 and M2 can be represented by any of the
24 test loops that belong to group 1.
Figure 3: Connection Configuration 3 (CPE/RT link)
4
Connection type S3 (fig 3) corresponds to a complete link between a DSLAM located in the RT
and a xDSL transceiver located in Customer Premises. The link incorporates both, the telephone
network portion and the Home Wiring portion of the subscriber loop in case of Single Family
Home. XDSL transmitters located in the CO generate additional FEXT that increases the
interference level at the receiver front end located in the Customer Premises.
Connection type M3 (fig 3) is similar to S3 connection, but the Customer Premises is having
Office Building Wiring configuration.
The telephone network portion of connection types S3 and M3 can be represented only by the
subgroup of test loops that comply with following CSA rules which define the distribution of
twisted pairs from DLC systems:
-
For loops with 26-gauge cable (used alone or in combination with other gauge cable), the
maximum allowable loop length, including bridged taps, is 9 kft.
If the cable is coarser than 26 gauge, the maximum allowable loop length, including
bridged taps, is 12 kft.
Any single bridged tap is limited to 2 kft maximum length, and the total length of all
bridged taps is limited to 2.5 kft maximum length.
The total cable length including bridged taps of a multi-gauge cable that contains 26Gauge wire may not exceed
Where L26 is the total length of 26 gauge wire in the cable (excluding any gauge Bridged tap)
and LBtap is the total length of bridged tap in the cable. All lengths are in kft. The above CSA
guidelines do not include any wiring in the central office nor any drop wiring and any wiring in
the customer premises
The telephone network portion of connection types S3 and M3 can be represented by any of
the 9 test loops that belong to group 2 which is a subgroup of group 1. Test loops of group 2
meet the CSA rules:

3- SCORES
Test Loop scores, Connections configurations scores, Impairment Combinations scores, Home
wiring scores and Office Building Wiring scores are preliminary data. Each individual score will be
updated regularly by telephone companies and Telecommunications Associations.
3-1 TEST LOOP SCORES
Only the nine test loops of group 2 are used in Connection configurations S3/M3. They are a
subset of the 24 test loops of group 1 that are considered in Connection configurations S1/M1
and S2/M2. For this reason, it is necessary to provide test loop scores for each specific
Connection configuration of the Network Model.
