3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Assistant Dean must take direct action and intervention on behalf of the University on reported
student violations of campus policy and in many cases of local and state law. This involves resolution
of complaints by university police, faculty, staff, and other students, of individual student misconduct
and misconduct of student organizations, through independent investigation of the incident,
determination of appropriate system-wide (NSHE) and university-wide charges, convening of informal
disciplinary meetings and/or formal disciplinary hearings, and imposition of the appropriate disciplinary
sanction. The Assistant Dean serves as the institution’s administrator for the intervention, education
and treatment of students who violate the student alcohol and other drug policy and are mandated for
these services. In addition, the Assistant Dean administrates these services for students who are
self-referred or court-referred to receive the services as a student.
Impact:
The actions of the Assistant Dean position are visible to the public and therefore have a direct impact
on the perception of the university and its reputation. Due to the nature of cases brought before
Student Conduct, decisions made by this position can determine whether a student repeats
inappropriate behavior or if the student actually learns from the experience. If the student’s behavior
changes and he/she becomes a better citizen of the University, it results in higher retention of these
students. Improper decisions or lack of following proper due process procedures can result in lawsuits
against the University. Inadequate maintenance of student conduct records and student intervention
program records, and lack of reporting of cases, can result in noncompliance with federal mandates.
Failure to report cases in the administration of the University’s Alcohol and Other Drug Intervention,
Education and Treatment program, for both mandated and self-referred students, could result in
serious student harm and problems with student persistence and academic success.
