Field description and profile of the graduate
The aim of the department is to educate graduates qualified for work in the branches of humanities, arts, media and cultural institutions that require individual critical thinking and systematic approach.
Bc. graduates are provided with a basic set of knowledge and capabilities in the field and general realm of humanities. The studies are based on a system of compulsory courses (both lectures and seminars on theory and history of film and audiovisual media – including lectures in foreign languages – as well as tutorials focusing on writing of a thesis).
Learning outcomes : the Bc. graduate will
1) learn a systematic overview of basic theoretical concepts, terminology, historical data and contexts
2) acquire basic skills of research work (literature search, archive research, work with sources)
3) have a good command of the methods of critical thinking and academic writing
4) be able to cope with project work and seminar presentations
5) know a foreign language and the basics of philosophy (compulsory for all faculty students)
Assessment :
Written test on history and theory (according to a given set of topics and sources), Bc. thesis and its defence.
M.A. graduates are provided with a complex set of knowledge capabilities in the field and general realm of humanities. The studies are based on a set of compulsory tutorials focused on the writing of an M.A. thesis as well as a set of compulsory-voluntary courses (including those in foreign languages). The M.A. project is being emphasized in the system of lectures.
Learning outcomes : the M.A. graduate will
1) gain complex knowledge of the theory and history of the field
2) acquire a theoretical and methodological specialization (according to the respective research)
3) have a good command of individual research work
4) be able to cope with team work and expert public presentation
Assessment :
Oral exam on the theory and history of the field (according to a given set of topics and sources), M.A. thesis and its defence.
PhD. graduates are provided with a specialized set of knowledge and capabilities in the field and general realm of humanities. The studies are based on a set of specialized tutorials supporting the doctoral thesis as well as a set of compulsory and voluntary courses (including those in foreign languages). The main emphasis lies on individual studies and research work.
Learning outcomes : the PhD. graduate will
1) gain specialized knowledge of the field and its history
2) acquire theoretical and methodological specialization (according to the respective research)
3) have a good command of individual research work
4) be able to cope with team work on a project and leading a project group
5) have practical experience in publishing, conference speeches, pedagogical work and working at a foreign research establishment
Assessment :
Oral exam on the theory and history of the field, doctoral thesis and its defence.
Main fields of graduates' job possibilities :
1. Individual, highly specialized scientific and pedagogical work at universities, academic institutions as well as other specialized workplaces (film archives, museums etc.); concerns mainly PhD. graduates.
2. Specialized pedagogical work at schools, academic institutions as well as other specialized workplaces (film archives, museums etc.); concerns mainly M.A. graduates.
3. Cultural and film journalism in printed and online media, public relations, editorial and translation work.
4. Cultural management: cinema, cultural and educational institutions managers, film event organizers.
5. Dramaturgical work: film, TV, radio, cinemas, festivals.
