Nursing and Midwifery Leadership Programmes www.leadershipacademy.nhs.uk NHS Leadership Academy – Nursing and Midwifery Leadership Programmes The Academy is currently offering two leadership development programmes for nurses and midwives. All places on these programmes will be allocated via our Local Delivery Partners in each region. What are the programmes about? Our nursing and midwifery communities are at the very front line of care in the NHS. While rewarding, these roles can also be extremely challenging. They take enormous amounts of emotional, spiritual and physical energy and this can often be compounded by demands that appear to detract from the ability of nurses and midwives to provide the care they would want to give. These programmes are for staff who have important leadership roles. They help support those leaders to provide the kind of climate our nurses and midwives need, to help those who care for others feel cared for themselves. As well as developing some new leadership skills the programmes will help develop leadership that is first and foremost about connecting to purpose and supporting caring and compassionate nursing and midwifery care. Who are the programmes for? The programme is open to nurses and midwives working in the NHS, Social Care, and the voluntary and independent sector where care is funded by the NHS. The Senior Operational Leaders programme is open to nursing and midwifery staff operating at AfC Band 8. These might be for example senior clinicians who wish to enhance their current leadership skills; nurse commissioners, or for people who are aspiring to a nurse director role. The Front Line programme is open to staff operating at AfC Bands 6 to 7 with a leadership responsibility, for example community and public health team leaders, ward managers, midwifery supervisors and nurses working in primary care. What does the Senior Operational Leaders programme look like? There are cohorts of 40 people, with each region in England having an allocation of places. The programme structure is broadly based on the successful NHS Top Leaders programme and its focus will be on areas current to nursing and midwifery leadership. This consists of a four day residential followed some weeks later by a follow up day when the whole cohort will meet again. The location for the residential dates will be Leeds. Each of the cohorts consists of a number of learning sets made up of approximately eight people. Each group has an allocated facilitator from the NHS Leadership Academy Faculty. The learning sets also meet separately in addition to the whole cohort dates to allow time to focus on work pertinent to the set. The facilitator is available for up to 4 days in addition to the residential. The dates and locations of these extra days will be decided by the group and must be within a calendar year of the start of the residential. In addition all participants will need to complete a 360 diagnostic as part of the programme. The diagnostic will provide participants with detailed feedback on their leadership style and the organisational climate that they create. This will be administered by Hay Group on behalf of the NHS Leadership Academy Senior Operational Leaders programme outcomes Upon completion, participants will: understand their leadership approach and the climate they create for others formulate a personal development plan that supports them as a leader and translates to improvement in the delivery of care have access to a broader network of peers and support over time to help embed their development be better equipped as the next generation of senior nurse leaders to improve patient care Dates for Senior Operational Leaders programme (to be held in Leeds) Due to the popularity of this course, we only have places ramaining in the West Midlands on the following cohorts: SENIOR OPERATIONAL LEADERS COHORT 10 19-22 MAY ‘14 & 5 SEPTEMBER ‘14 COHORT 11 23-26 JUNE 23-26 ’14 & 24 OCTOBER 24 ‘14 COHORT 12 21-24 JULY ’14 & 14 NOVEMBER ‘14 COHORT 13 1-4 SEPTEMBER ’14 & 18 DECEMBER ‘14 COHORT 14 13-16 OCTOBER & 9 JANUARY ‘15 COHORT 15 3-6 NOVEMBER ’14 & 6 FEBRUARY ‘15 If you are operating at band 8 range or you manage someone in this range who would like to join this programme, you can email George Turvey on george.turvey@wm.hee.nhs.uk.
