CDFII Experiment (E835) 1. Goal of the experiment The improved Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDFII) measures most features of physics interest of proton-antiproton interactions at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, at a c.m.s. energy of about 2 TeV. The Tevatron is the highest energy particle accelerator in the world, and the only hadron collider. The main goal of the so-called "run2" that started in March 2001 is to discover new physics beyond what is understood in the framework of the Standard Model of Elementary Particles. In addition, a difficult but not impossible goal is to discover a low mass Higgs boson (mass less than about 180 GeV/c2), which is the last unexplored feature of the Standard Model. Accurate measurements will be made of heavy flavor (top, beauty) production and decay properties, including Bs oscillations and search for CP violation effects in the B-sector. Most properties of events with W,Z bosons, large energy jets, and diffractive topology will be measured with precision limited only by systematics. 2. Publications of the year 2001 The analysis of data collected in run1 (1992-1995) continued to produce important results. 18 publications in the Phys.Rev. and Phys.Rev.Lett. have reported measurements on features of top quark production, beauty hadron properties, hadron jet and hadron interaction physics, electroweak physics, and on searches for non-standard model phenomena. The list of the 2001 publications is attached. 3. Plan for the years 2002-2004 The Tevatron Collider run2 is expected to last for about 7 years, and it is conventionally split into period a) and period b). During period a) data will be collected with minimal interrumptions for maintenance and repairs till end of 2004. The goal is for the Tevatron to deliver to CDF an integrated luminosity of 2fb**(-1). Besides sharpening the entire set of its previous studies, by analysing these data CDF aims at measuring several new phenomena, noticeably the oscillation frequency of the neutral strange B-hadron, CP symmetry violation effects in hadronically decaying Bhadrons, and to gather significant information on the possible existence of the Higgs boson below 130 GeV in mass.
