5. Description of Position:
The Delaware Department of Education is seeking to hire two (2) Education Associates for
Mathematics to provide leadership in the implementation of standards-based curriculum,
instruction, and professional development in mathematics in grades K-12, one Associate with
a specific emphasis at the elementary (K-5) and another Associate with a specific emphasis
at the middle and high school levels (6-12). The scope of work will require significant
coordination and collaboration both within the Department of Education and with district and
school personnel. These individuals will be members of the Curriculum, Instruction, and
Professional Development Workgroup in the Teaching and Learning Branch of the
Department.
6. Major Responsibilities:
a. Coordinate state meetings and committee work to further the implementation of the
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.
b. Work collaboratively with districts, charters, and math personnel to support standardsbased mathematics curriculum and instruction for all students.
c. Work collaboratively with the Delaware Math Coalition and math specialists to design and
deliver a coherent and comprehensive professional development program and Common
Core aligned resources for K-12 mathematics teachers, math specialists, and leaders.
d. Provide technical assistance in the implementation of the Mathematics Common Core
Standards.
e. Manage Title II Part B Math/Science Partnership Competitive Grants.
f. Design, facilitate, and monitor professional development, in a variety of contexts, and in
collaboration with a variety of organizations to ensure implementation of mathematics
standards.
g. Collaborate with Mathematics Education Associate counterpart as well as within and
across work groups on mathematics and other key initiatives.
h. Develop and disseminate materials to support best practices in mathematics curriculum,
instruction, and professional development.
i. Serve as a representative of Delaware for national collaborative projects and state
consortium efforts related to current job responsibilities.
j. Review local curriculum documents for alignment with state standards.
k. Work collaboratively with the Assessment Work Group, particularly in association with the
state assessment system.
l. Coordinate and promote the annual Presidential Awards for Excellence in Math and
Science Teaching (PAEMST) program.
m. Perform other duties as assigned by the Work Group Director or the Chief Academic
Officer.
7. Desired Qualifications and Skills:

For Elementary Mathematics Associate: Master’s Degree from an accredited college or
university, preferably with a concentration in elementary education and/or curriculum,
instruction, and professional development; certification in (or eligible for) Delaware Educator
Licensure and Certification as an Elementary Teacher or Middle Level Mathematics Teacher.
For Secondary Mathematics Associate: Master’s Degree from an accredited college or
university, preferably with a concentration in mathematics and/or curriculum, instruction,
and/or professional development; certification in (or eligible for) Delaware Educator Licensure
and Certification as a Middle Level Mathematics Teacher or Secondary Mathematics
Teacher.
Experience:
 Minimum of five years successful teaching in K-12 schools in math or similar experience
 For Elementary Mathematics Associate: Experience with mathematics instruction;
especially K-5
 For Secondary Mathematics Associate: Experience with mathematics instruction;
especially 6-12
 Firm knowledge of national trends and Common Core Standards at all grade levels K-12
 Experience with mathematics instruction across the content areas
 Preferred experience with technical assistance to districts and charters
 Preferred experience with coordination of teacher professional development programs
 Knowledge of national and international models of successful mathematics curricula and
comprehensive professional development programs for mathematics teachers
 Leadership experience with successful K-12 mathematics reform initiatives at the school
district and/or state-wide level
 Higher education experience in mathematics teaching, research, or collaboration with
pre-service teacher education programs in mathematics
Skills:
 Knowledge and skills in best practices of professional development with adult learners
 Excellent oral and written communication skills
 Performs responsibilities with minimal supervision
 Capable of setting priorities and working in collaboration with others
 Capable of setting priorities and working under pressure
 Able to proactively problem-solve with professionalism
 Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with staff in a tactful and congenial
manner
 Understands the Department’s organizational aims and objectives
 Exercises discretion and confidentiality
8. Salary:
Salary will be computed in accordance with the experience and training of the individual
selected and in accordance with the salary schedules for employees of the Delaware
Department of Education. Direct deposit of payroll checks is mandatory for state
employment, and employees are paid on a lag pay schedule with the first payment made
after approximately one month of employment.
9. Notes:
A criminal background check is required. The successful candidate must meet Delaware’s
test of basic skills requirements in reading, writing and mathematics. The successful

candidate must demonstrate during the interview process an understanding of diversity,
educational equity and multicultural education. The successful candidate should expect to
perform any other related activities needed to deliver the position’s key duties and
responsibilities and follow any other instructions as defined by his/her supervisor.
