APPENDIX 02 The B.A. Program in Critical and Visual Studies Proposal for Curriculum Revision Pages 11 and 12 Below are lists of courses designated as “Concentration” and “Distribution” in CVS’s program application. Only a minority designated as “Concentrations” can be associated with real course numbers and descriptions in the catalog. The bulk of the courses are under Special Topics or Special Studies: SS-490, HUM-490/590 and SCI-490/590. See pages 7 through 14 for course descriptions and listings of Special Topics courses. The Concentrations (page 12) In consultation with the advisor, students choose five courses from one of the concentrations. The following list of courses includes courses currently taught within a two-year cycle; not all courses are offered each year. Approved studio courses may also count toward a concentration. Additionally, each semester there are special topics courses in each department, which may fulfill a concentration, with the permission of the student’s advisor. In the following lists, special topics courses for 2007-2008 are shown at the end of each list in italics. May 21, 2008 https://my.pratt.edu Social Science & Cultural Studies Department SS-490: Special Topics Course Description in Pratt Bulletin: Special topic offerings in the social sciences focus on areas of topical interest and current faculty research. They allow a place in the curriculum for more concentrated study in traditional fields as well as reconceptualization of existing modes of understanding the social world. The subject matter of these courses change semester-to-semester as a reflection of new scholarly developments and the emerging interests of the students and faculty. SS-490 counts in the same way as any other social science elective and students may take a SS-490 listing only once. Since schedules and topics change frequently students should seek information on current SS490 offerings from the chair of the Social Science and Cultural Studies Department. 1 Context/Concepts in Critical 08/SP-SS-490-11 Teacher: Sameetah Agha Teacher: Lisabeth During 37 SPT: the End of Philosophy 07/FA-SS-490-07 2 Dewey/Pragmatism 07/SPR-SS-490-13 Teacher: Robert Richardson 38 SPT: Visual Anthropology 07/FA-SS-490-09 Teacher: Thomas Miller 3 Ethnicity and Nationalism 07/S2-SS-490-C1 Teacher: Kumru Toktamis 39 SPT: Weimar Film/Culture 07/FA-SS-490-02 Teacher: Lisabeth During 4 Hollywood to the Middle East 08/SP-SS-490-13 Teacher: Ahmed Ibrahim 39 SPT: American Studies/Visual 08/SP-SS-490-10 Teacher: Ann Holder Teacher: Kimberly Lamm 5 Intro to South Asian Archaolo 08/SP-SS-490-02 Teacher: Uzma Rizvi 40 SPT: Arch as Vision Machine 08/SP-SS-490-09 Teacher: Michael Eng 6 Philosophy Film and Religion 08/SP-SS-490-06 Teacher: Lisabeth During 41 SPT: Beyond Slavery 08/SP-SS-490-12 Teacher: Richard Goodman 7 Special Topics 08/FA-SS-490-12 Teacher: Miriam Greenberg Course description pending. 42 SPT: Imagining New York 08/SP-SS-490-08 Teacher: May Joseph 8 Special Topics 08/FA-SS-490-13 Teacher: Jonathan Beller Course description pending. 43 SPT: Science/Origin of Race 08/SP-SS-490-07 Teacher: Bennie Brown 9 Special Topics 08/S1-SS-490-A3 44 SPT: Bodies in Cultural Landscape 08/SP-SS-490-15 7 Teacher: May Joseph Course description pending. 10 Special Topics 08/SP-SS-490-K1 Teacher: Ann Holder Course Description Pending 45 SPT: Cognitive Psychology 08/FA-SS-490-07 Teacher: Rebecca Winkel 11 Special Topics 08/SP-SS-490-K2 Teacher: Ann Holder Course Description Pending 46 SPT: Conflict War 20th Century 08/S1-SS-490-A2 Teacher: Ahmed Ibrahim 12 Special Topics 08/SP-SS-490-K3 Teacher: Ann Holder Course Description Pending 47 SPT: Darwin Marx Nietzsche 08/FA-SS-490-05 Teacher: Bennie Brown 13 SPT: Foucault & Crit. The class is conducted as much as possible in French, and focuses equally on listening, speaking, reading and writing. The thrust this semester is more advanced spoken and written French. We begin with a review of the present tense of regular, irregular and pronominal verbs and the formation of their imperative forms. Forming the simple future tense and the conditional mood will enable students to express projected and hypothetical ideas. The class will then learn to form and use the present and past subjunctive moods, essential in romance languages. In grammar, the continued study of pronouns will refine speech and written sentences. We will read (and recite) poems of Baudelaire, Apollinaire, and XXX and read short stories by Maupassant and Yourcenar for vocabulary, comprehension and style. Finally, a French feature film will be viewed and discussed. Introduction to French (102)08/SP-HUM-490-11 Teacher: Sharon Snow This course is a continuation of French 101, and is required for credit for both courses. The course focuses equally on oral comprehension and speaking, reading and written expression. Students will learn to speak by mimicking, responding to questions and participating in brief conversations with one another. New vocabulary will be presented in the context of everyday life in France. Memorization of vocabulary and verb conjugations will enable students to converse with basic fluency about the things that interest them. Written assignments will anchor the spoken forms in accurately spelled words and will provide practice of new grammar. This semester, students will finish learning the most commonly used irregular verbs in the present tense. In addition, the two most important past tenses (the passé composé and the imparfait) will enable students to talk and write about past events in their lives and in the world. As in the previous semester, fluency in spoken and written French will progress from simple sentences to paragraphs and short compositions. The class will enjoy poems, songs and readings on cultural topics. Finally, the class will view and discuss a featurae-length French film. 12 Mathematics and Science Department SCI-490: Special Topics Course Description in Pratt Bulletin: Focuses on areas of topical interest and current faculty research. Throughout the semester you will develop an informed perspective for assessing the degree to which human evolutionary history exerts an influence on contemporary culture. SPT-Astronomy07/FA-SCI-490-03 Teacher: Damon Chaky This is a TWO CREDIT course in basic astronomy, which will provide an overview of our current understanding of the universe around us. Topics will include the origin of the universe, galaxies, stars, planets, interstellar matter, black holes, space travel, the possibility (or not) of extraterrestrial life... as well as the observational techniques we use to reveal the universe. SPT: Science of Light 08/FA-SCI-490-06 Teacher: Richard Leigh This course will introduce students to: - The fundamental physical nature of light, and how it is emitted, transmitted, and absorbed; 13 - How light is perceived by the human nervous system and translated into concepts and images in the brain; and - Technical applications useful to Pratt students in careers in art and design or architecture.
