Subject : Math Grades: Math Sum Balance 3-5 Goal: Students will be balance on different body parts on numbers that add up to a sum given. Content Connections Physical Education Objectives Students will demonstrate body awareness and balance while balancing on phone mat Students will cooperate with a partner to solve the math problem and add up to the correct sum Materials Phone - Learnercise or Classroom Movement Mats Seat Work 1. Students will be given a number and how many numbers in the addition problem. For example: The sum total is 16 – use 3 different number that add up to 16 such as 5 + 8 + 3 = 16 or 6 + 9 + 1 = 16. Cover those numbers on your desk mat to solve the problem. Movement Connection 1. Partner each stand beside a Phone Mat. 2. Teacher calls out the sum total and the number of body parts to balance on to add up to the sum. 3. 1st partner starts it off by balancing on one foot on a number 4. 2nd partner balances on a body part on a different number 5. Balancing using different numbers and body parts continues until the correct number of body parts and numbers add up to the sum. For example – the sum is 24 and you must use 5 body parts between you and your partner Lesson Plan designed by: Debby Mitchell 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 1st partner balances on one foot on 3 2nd partner balances on 9 – now equaling 12 1st partner places knee on 2 – now equaling 14 2nd partner places knee on 6 – now equaling 20 1st partner places hand on 4 – now solving the problem to equal 24 Total GeoFitness, Inc. 2009 3 9 2 6 4 24 Math Sum Balance Number of Body Parts = Number of Body Parts Partner Name Sum = Body Part Number Selected 1 2 Sub Total Or Total 3 Sub Total Or Total 4 Sub Total Or Total 5 Total *can use bigger chart and laminate – Teacher or Students determine Sum & How Many Body Parts GeoFitness, Inc. 2009 Math Sum Balance Worksheet for 5 Body Parts Sum = 16 Number of Body Parts Partner Name Sum = 28 Number Selected Body Part 1 2 Number of Body Parts Partner Name 1 2 Sub Total Sub Total 3 3 Sub Total Sub Total 4 4 Sub Total Sub Total 5 5 Total Total Sum = 30 Number of Body Parts Number Selected Body Part Partner Name Sum = 36 Number Selected Body Part 1 2 Number of Body Parts Partner Name Number Selected Body Part 1 2 Sub Total 3 Sub Total 3 Sub Total 4 Sub Total 4 Sub Total 5 Sub Total 5 Total Total GeoFitness, Inc. 2009
