INTEGERS WEB QUEST
How often do you use integers in your daily lives? Probably way more than you
think! Integers are used every day when watching a sporting event, checking the
temperature outside, and playing games.
Can you take use of the understanding of integers that you have developed in the
classroom to identify, and work with the integers that are found in your everyday
world?
Here is what you are going to do…
You will use a number of resources, and examples to complete a series of activities that
will allow you to strengthen your understanding of integers.
Then you will demonstrate your strengthened understanding by creating sample reallife questions that help teach integers, as well as complete some activities that involve
applying your understanding to integer situations taken from your everyday world.
PART ONE
Using the websites provided below, you need to develop well explained answers to
the questions that follow. By completing the questions you will be doing research on
integers. Your research will be completed on the internet, using SPECIFIC sites
provided for you. Your research will be recorded using Microsoft Word documents.
You will need to complete the web quest according to its instructions and
requirements.
WEBSITES Use the following websites to answer questions 1 – 5:

Questions to be researched:
1. What is the definition of an integer?
2. In what century were negative integers finally accepted?
3. Which culture was the first to use negative integers?
4. When was the word integer introduced?
5. What does the word integer mean in Latin?
WEBSITES
Use the following websites to answer questions 6 – 10.

OPERATIONS ON INTEGERS
http://www.mathguide.com/lessons/Integers.html
Use the Rules for Working with Integers, and Operations on Integers to help you
research your answers for questions 6 – 10:
6. How do you add two integers if they have the same sign? Make sure that you
explain how to determine the sum’s sign.
7. How do you add two integers if they have different signs? Again, explain how to
determine the sum’s sign.
8. Explain how you determine a difference when subtracting two integers that have the
same signs. A solid, understandable explanation is required.
9. Explain how you determine a difference when subtracting two integers that have
different signs. A solid, understandable explanation is required.
10. Explain how you multiple and divide integers. Provide a solid explanation. A chart
is acceptable as part of your answer.
PART 2 – Complete.
1. Identify three examples of how integers are used in your everyday world.
Provide a solid explanation that demonstrates your understanding of how the integers
are involved with the examples that you identify. Explain below in three well written
paragraphs.
2. Create FOUR, real-world application problems that involve each of the four basic
operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Each problem that
you create MUST use positive (+) and negative (-) integers. These four problems and
their solutions should be numbered and written below. Don’t forget to include the
solution to each problem too.
