Your Mathematical “Coat of Arms”
For the cover of your mathematical autobiography, you will design a mathematical
“Coat of Arms”. A coat of arms is a symbol, usually on a shield, that represents your
family. You will use both your first and last names in your design. To build the design you
will use the coding system below:

Write your first name vertically
and end the first column with
the first letter of your first
name. The second column
continues your first until the
columns are the same length.

Use the code above to form
ordered pairs that represent
your first name.
Use the same method to write,
code, and form the ordered pairs
that represent your last name.

Now create the design…

Using quarter inch graph paper, plot all the order pairs in order, first name
then last name. Connect the points with line segments as you go.

Reflect all the points and segments across the y-axis.

Reflect all the points and segments across the origin.

Reflect all the points and segments across the x-axis.

Color your design to reflect your personality.

On the back of your “Coat of Arms” design, show your name and the
ordered pairs used in your design, as shown above.

Attach the final product to your mathematical autobiography.
Now on the calculator...
Place your coded name in the 1st quadrant...





Enter the X coordinates of both your first and last name in L1.
Enter the Y coordinates of both your first and last name in L2.
Set up Stat-Plot 1, choosing the connected line graph.
Set up an appropriate Window.
Graph your coded name in the 1st quadrant.
How would you reflect your coded name into the 2nd quadrant?







Which coordinates become negative in the 2nd quadrant?
You need a new List.
Put your cursor at “command central” for L3.
Type: - L? and then Enter. Did you get the results you wanted?
Set up Stat-Plot 2, choosing the connected line graph and the correct lists
for the 2nd quadrant.
Set up an appropriate Window.
Graph your coded name in both the 1st and 2nd quadrants.
How would you reflect your coded name into the 3rd quadrant?







Which coordinates become negative in the 3rd quadrant?
Do you need any new List?
Put your cursor at “command central” for L4.
Type: - L? and then Enter. Did you get the results you wanted?
Set up Stat-Plot 3, choosing the connected line graph and the correct lists
for the 3rd quadrant.
Set up an appropriate Window.
Graph your coded name in the 1st , 2nd and 3rd quadrants.
To finish your “Mathematical Coat of Arms”, you need to reflect your
coded name into the 4th quadrant. Have you anticipated a problem?
Since there is no Stat-Plot 4, we need to save the Picture we have in quadrants 1, 2, and 3.
The calculator considers the graph a Drawing, so press 2nd Program to enter the Draw menu.




Arrow over to STO (for storage).
Press enter for StorePic.
StorePic should appear on the Home Screen and you need
to assign a reference number to it… ex. StorePic 3.
Your coded name in the 1st , 2nd and 3rd quadrants is now
saved under the name StorePic 3.
Now we can finish your “Mathematical Coat of Arms”.
How would you reflect your coded name into the 4th quadrant?






Which coordinates become negative in the 4th quadrant?
Do you need any new Lists?
Set up Stat-Plot 1, choosing the connected line graph and the correct lists
for the 4th quadrant.
Turn off Stat-Plots 2 and 3 .
Set up an appropriate Window.
Graph your coded name in the 4th quadrants.
Putting it all together…





While you have the graph in the 4th quadrant, go back
to 2nd Program - Draw menu.
Arrow over to STO (for storage)
Choose 2-RecallPic
RecallPic appears on the Home Screen and needs the
reference number that you used to StorePic…
ex. RecallPic 3
The coded name in the 1st , 2nd and 3rd quadrants should
now appear along with the 4th quadrant!
Don’t forget to save the total picture…




Go back to 2nd Program - Draw menu.
Arrow over to STO (for storage)
Press Enter to choose StorePic
Don’t forget to put a reference number with the StorePic command.
Putting your Mathematical Coat of Arms into the Start-up APPS.




Press the APPS key and check to see if you have Start-up.
Choose Start-up and press Enter.
Press Enter again to see the program choices.
