AR 9: In Support of Maintaining Competitive Tuition Waivers for Non-Resident University Students Author: Representative Natalie Butler Sponsors: Natalie Butler, Ashley Carlisle, Janette Martinez, Phuoc Anne Nguyen, Matt Portillo, Philip Wiseman, John Woods WHEREAS, Approximately 4% of Undergraduate students at The University of Texas Austin are out-of-state students1 and approximately 4% of Undergraduate students are international students2; and, WHEREAS, The University of Texas at Austin has lower numbers of international and out-ofstate students than many of its comparison schools1&2; and, WHEREAS, Over half of Graduate Students are international and out-of-state students3; and, WHEREAS, Non-resident Graduate and Undergraduate students contribute to increased geographic diversity and research dollars for The University of Texas at Austin3; and, WHEREAS, 31.22% of Undergraduate out-of-state and international students, and 68.78% of Graduate out-of-state and international students held competitive academic scholarships and tuition waivers in the 2008-2009 academic year4; and, WHEREAS, These tuition waivers allow competitive non-resident students to attend The University of Texas at Austin that might not be able to afford tuition without the waivers; therefore, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Student Government of The University of Texas at Austin supports maintaining the current level of distribution of tuition waivers for international and out-of-state students in order to preserve academic excellence and maintain diversity; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That The Student Government of The University of Texas at Austin encourages the Office of Student Financial Services to accommodate the financial needs of as many non-resident students as possible; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be sent to the Office of the President, the Office of Student Financial Services, the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, the Dean of the School of Architecture, the Dean of the McCombs School of Business, the Dean of the College of Communication, the Dean of the Division of Continuing and Innovative Education, the Dean of the College of Communication, the Dean of the Cockrell School of Engineering, the Dean of the College of Fine Arts, the Dean of the Jackson School of Geosciences, the Dean of the Graduate School, the Dean of the School of Information, the Dean of the School of Law, the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, the Dean of the College of Natural Sciences, the Dean of the School of Nursing, the Dean of the College of Pharmacy, the Dean of the LBJ School for Public Affairs, the Dean of the School of Social Work, and the Dean of the School of Undergraduate Studies, the Office of Governmental Relations, the members of the Higher Education Committee of the Texas Senate, and the members of the Higher Education Committee of the Texas House of Representatives. 1: http://www.usnews.com/articles/education/2009/11/19/looking-for-an-out-of-state-publicuniversity.html 2: http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/national-most-international 3: Conversation with office of the Graduate School at the University of Texas at Austin 4: Tuition Exempted/Waived 2008-09 White Sheet
