David Fleming-Brown Travel Scholarship Information for Applicants 2015 Introduction The University of Glasgow is delighted to announce the 6th year of the David Fleming-Brown Travel Scholarship. Aims To provide funding for PGR students to undertake a course of study lasting at least three months at a North American Institution. To provide funding which will enrich and further the award-holder's academic experience and research achievements. To foster collaborative links with institutions in North America. The Award The Scholarship will be valid for travel up to one year from the date of the Selection Panel meeting on 18 May 2015 unless otherwise agreed. The Scholarship is designed to contribute towards placement expenses and will not cover all expenses incurred. The Scholarship will comprise of a contribution towards: Expenses incurred in obtaining superior standard accommodation within or near to the university or institution where the student will study. Travel expenses. Other expenses as approved by the Selection Committee. The value of the Scholarship can vary and the number and value of the awards allocated each year will be at the discretion of the Panel. Funds will generally be available from July of the year of award, and individual Scholarships are unlikely to exceed £500. It is the responsibility of the student to manage their expenditure according to the allowance allocated. The Scholarship amount will not be increased to cover unexpected expenses incurred by the student whilst on placement. All decisions of the Selection Committee are final. Successful and unsuccessful applicants will be notified as soon as possible after a decision has been reached by the Selection Committee. Eligibility Open to all postgraduate research students (PhD or Masters by Research) from any discipline. Home, EU and EEA citizens currently registered at the University of Glasgow. International students from out with the EU or EEA may not apply. Open to high quality students who have (in the opinion of the Selection Committee) already shown academic distinction and promise during the term of their research studies. Continued collaborative research between Glasgow and the North American institution is desirable. Students would not normally be awarded the Scholarship within six months of starting or within six months prior to their expected submission date. Applications Applicants should provide an outline of their suggested use of the Scholarship. This information should include: Destination, anticipated trip dates and a breakdown of costs and expenses which the award is to cover. How the Scholarship will enhance your research. How the Scholarship will increase collaboration between the institutions. Evidence that the candidate is able to obtain the necessary visas if applicable. Applicants are asked to indicate how their current research is being funded (i.e. University scholarship, Research Council Studentship, self funded etc). This will enable the Selection Committee to have a better understanding of the student’s financial situation. Please note that students in receipts of external funding are still eligible to apply. Applicants should provide written evidence of communication with the destination University/Institution with regards to the proposed visit. This documentation should include the dates or length of the proposed visit and should indicate any conditions (e.g. securing funding). This can be an informal communication, and the dates of the visit may be unconfirmed at this point. For example, the evidence of communication could be an invitation to visit in letter or email format from either the host institution or supervisor. The candidate’s supervisor and Head of School/RI or delegated signatory will be required to sign the application to confirm that the applicant has dispensation to embark on the trip and that the scholarship will make a significant contribution to the candidate’s research. Candidates will be postgraduate research students registered at the University of Glasgow planning to undertake a period of study at a North American Institution. The Scholarship will be valid for travel up to one year from the date of the Selection Panel meeting. Changes to the proposed visit dates should be notified immediately to your supervisor and pgr@glasgow.ac.uk for approval. Each Scholar will be required to enter into a contract with the University of Glasgow. Funds will usually be made available 3 months before the proposed visit or earlier if requested. Funds will only be released on confirmation from the relevant supervisor/Graduate School that the student’s progress is satisfactory. If a candidate withdraws from study within 2 months of their return without good cause the funds allocated may be required to be repaid to the Scholarship fund. Each Scholar will be required to submit a report to the University within 3 months of their return from the centre of advanced study. The report should include a description of the research undertaken under the Scholarship and the benefit the scholar gained from the award. The report should also include any appropriate photographs or illustrations of the research undertaken but must not include sensitive data. The award is conditional upon the Scholar’s consent that the report will be published on the University of Glasgow website to publicise the David Fleming-Brown Travel Scholarship.
