JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Associate Director of Development, Corporate & Foundation Relations Job ID: #10430 Location: Main Campus-Berkeley Full/Part Time: Full-Time Regular/Temporary: Regular Department: CITRIS Departmental Overview: With support from industry and private gifts, the State of California has invested in the establishment of four Governor Gray Davis Institutes for Science and Innovation. As one of these institutes, the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) is a university, industry, and government partnership that manages a current annual research budget of over $50 M. Through its advanced research and educational mission, CITRIS is charged to work with its partners to undertake the basic research, perform technology demonstration, and facilitate technology transfer to industry and government, leading to a highly-visible and profound impact on the quality of life of the people of California, the growth of California-based industry, and improved effectiveness for State agencies. CITRIS is a four-campus institute comprising the Berkeley, Davis, Santa Cruz, and Merced campuses of the University of California. Berkeley is the lead campus for the institute and all operational, administrative, and financial matters for the Institute are provided or coordinated from that campus. CITRIS Corporate Strategic Partners (CSP) form a major cornerstone of the research support structure of the Institute. CSP relationships are based on company research interests and currently comprise some of the world's leading hi-tech companies. Contributions to CITRIS are passed directly through to the affiliated faculty and smaller center research programs. These relationships require careful management and 962427.1 coordination, not only among the engineering schools on the four CITRIS campuses but within multiple disciplines within each of those campuses. Responsibilities Reporting to CITRIS's Director of Development, the Associate Director of Development, Corporate & Foundation Relations will work to identify, cultivate, and solicit corporate and foundation major gifts for CITRIS initiatives and projects,focusing on commitments of $150,000 and above and (including multi-million dollar multi-disciplinary support). Reporting to the CITRIS Director of Development, this position will also work closely with the CITRIS Director, the three additional CITRIS campuses (UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, UC Merced), the Berkeley College of Engineering Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations and faculty and administrators at the UC Berkeley Colleges/Schools of Engineering, Business, Information, Chemistry, Letters &Sciences and others across campus to leverage and maximize corporate and foundation giving to CITRIS. The incumbent will apply knowledge and understanding of the University of California and CITRIS, its traditions, programs, campus issues, needs, and priorities to the development process. The incumbent is expected to motivate administrators, faculty, staff, and volunteers to participate in the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of new CITRIS Corporate Strategic Partners. Through this collaboration, the incumbent will develop and implement tailored action plans for a portfolio of major corporate and foundation prospects and donors. The incumbent will manage the identification, cultivation and solicitation of corporate and foundation prospects; is responsible for the development of compelling oral and written proposals for corporate and foundation prospects and is able to write comprehensive business and technically-oriented summaries of corporate visits and related events; will represent CITRIS at numerous campus and regional events and programs; will participate in and will plan for major CITRIS events that nurture existing relationships and lead to new CITRIS corporate funding; and will coordinate strategic visits for corporate and foundation prospects designed to explore and facilitate mutual interests - often focusing on specific research topics. The Associate Director of Development, Corporate & Foundation Relations will initiate new programs to leverage significant corporate and foundation giving to CITRIS. The incumbent must develop creative approaches to complex leadership gift fund -2- 962427.1 raising, including matching institutional donor interests to CITRIS priorities, and identifying new corporate partner prospects. Furthermore, the incumbent will create tailored proposals for specific prospects. Simultaneously managing multiple projects requires creativity, high productivity, and advance problem-solving skills. As a member of the CITRIS team, the Associate Director of Development, Corporate & Foundation Relations will collaborate in identifying, planning, developing, implementing, and following through with CITRIS's Corporate Strategic Partners. The incumbent has the responsibility for managing relationships with some of CITRIS's most valued corporate and foundation supporters, and the incumbent must ensure that these relationships are nurtured and maintained for the benefit of the institution over time. Required Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS: - Significant academic development/advancement experience particularly in industrial relations or corporate and foundation relations; - Experience managing complex academic public/private partnerships; - Effective identification, cultivation, and solicitation of corporate and foundation prospects (primarily for research funding); - Development and implementation raising campaigns; - Leadership and diplomacy skills to work with diverse constituents, including faculty, staff, senior administrators, and high level corporate and foundation officers; - Ability to develop an extensive understanding of CITRIS's key programs and funding priorities and knowledge of constituent research initiatives, centers, and research projects; - Advanced persuasive writing and oral communication as well as an understanding of marketing principles; - Strong leadership and planning skills essential; -3- of programmatic fund 962427.1 - Ability to oversee multiple projects discern complex and competing interests; - Outstanding oral and written communication skills; ability to successfully interact with senior corporate and foundation officers, faculty, campus leaders, staff and community members; - Must be comfortable in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment while effectively executing a very challenging set of campaign/corporate and foundation gift plans and programs; - Ability to essential; - Background in science and/or engineering, with experience in the business community essential.
