Dear Applicant:
Thank you for your interest in Poly Reps and Recruitment 2012. Poly Reps is a voluntary,
honorary, public relations organization of 33 students who assist in the promotion of Cal Poly
to prospective and current students, as well as their parents and alumni. Throughout the
year we give campus tours and presentations to prospective students and their parents, as well
as serve on panels discussing student life at Cal Poly for counselors, parents, teachers,
students and alumni. On campus we run programs like Hometown Heroes, homecoming
activities, high school outreach efforts, and alumni events. Aside from serving Cal Poly and
alumni, we do a lot of fun things together including quarterly retreats, social events, and
yearly conferences. We strongly encourage you to fill out this application and take part in
Poly Rep New Member Recruitment.

To be eligible for Recruitment you must:
 Attend one of the MANDATORY pre-selection meetings.
 Submit a typed application by January 17th, 2012 at 4:00PM to Admin, Room 206
 Have a 2.5 cumulative grade-point average at the time of application
 Plan on graduating no sooner than June 2013.
Please review the next page of this packet. Listed are the dates for the Mandatory Meetings,
the application deadline and interview dates.

POLY REPS Mission Statement:
Promoting Cal Poly, and personalizing the university to prospective students, their parents,
and other visitors to the campus.
Increasing awareness of the benefits of Alumni Association membership and encouraging Cal
Poly students and alumni to participate in Cal Poly Alumni Association activities.
Supporting Alumni Association events and representing the Cal Poly student body.
Developing student leaders who practice teamwork, self-motivation, creativity and
friendship.
Activities of POLY REPS include:
 Giving campus tours and presentations to prospective students and their parents,
alumni, and special visitors.
 Making presentations about Cal Poly at high schools and community colleges.
 Serving on panels discussing student life at Cal Poly for counselors, parents, teachers,
students, and alumni.
 Representing Cal Poly as hosts or resource persons at campus public relations events.
 Attending bi-monthly meetings and annual tour training and fall & winter retreats.
 Enjoying special events for members such as the new member celebration, the fall
retreat, district and national conventions, annual End-of-the-Year Banquet, etc.
 Organizing STORM, hometown hero training, Campus tours, New Student Welcome
Events, AWOL, etc. for Cal Poly Students.
 Informing current Cal Poly students about the Student Alumni Association, alumni
participation after graduation, how to stay connected to Cal Poly, and the benefits of
the Cal Poly Alumni Association.

Membership in POLY REPS is limited. Selection criteria includes:
 Dedication to group and time commitment (approx. 15 - 20 hours/month)
 Sincere desire to represent Cal Poly
 Ability to work well with others
 Effective speaking ability
 Ability to make a positive first impression
 Ability to adapt to a variety of situations
 Minimum 2.5 cumulative grade-point average, full-time student, a minimum of one
quarter completed at Cal Poly with at least one year of coursework remaining
 Although hard work and commitment are required, much of the individual
participation in activities can be worked around the Poly Rep’s class and study schedule

the university) which develops the skills and confidence vital to success in job interviews, and
career advancement.

Please type your answers to all of the following questions. Use no more than two pages (you
may use both sides if necessary) and use a standard (12 point) font size. Those who will be
scoring your application will not know your name, as the application cover sheet containing
your personal information will be removed. Please remember to make NO reference to your name or
otherwise identify yourself in answering the questions.
Attach the two pages to your personal information sheet (the previous page) and turn in the
completed application to Admin. 206 by the application deadline: Tuesday January 17th,
2012 by 4:00PM.
APPLICATION QUESTIONS:
1. “It’s not always the mistakes you make, but how you learn from them.” What’s the
biggest mistake you’ve made in life? Explain what you’ve learned from this process,
and how you’ve implemented those lesson(s) into subsequent experiences.
2. Your friend in engineering has discovered the key to time travel and has asked you to
be the first one in the machine. Besides the fact that you must return within 24 hours
(or risk being stuck forever), there are no limits to what you can do, where you can
go, or who/what you can see. Describe your experience.
3. Cal Poly has been personified into human form. You have $50; plan the perfect date
for you and your school. Please provide an itinerary of the date, and a brief
explanation for each step.
4. You are the writer for a new reality show based on your life. Please state the title of
your show, and pitch the pilot episode to the studio that will potentially be giving it the
green light—if they like it.
5. List three characteristics every leader should have. Do you feel that you’ve
demonstrated those qualities? If so, tell us how. If not, tell us why not.
6. You’ve graduated from Cal Poly, spent a significant amount of time away from school,
and have become extremely successful doing something you love. The Cal Poly
Alumni Association has contacted you asking for a donation, however they don’t want
or need your money. Tell us exactly what you’ve become successful at, and how you
will give back to your alma mater in a way that directly relates to this success.
