2015 Scholar of the Year Awards
Guidelines
Deadline: January 26, 2015
The University Research Committee invites applications and nominations for the 2015 Scholar of the Year
Awards. One $2,500 award will be made for each faculty rank (assistant/associate/full) to honor excellence in
scholarly activities. A dean can nominate only one person at each rank for Scholar of the Year.
Eligibility


All tenured and tenure-track faculty, including research faculty (with the exception of FAU Eminent Scholars and FAU
distinguished professors) and all faculty librarians, are eligible if they have been on the FAU payroll for three years by
the application date.
Previous winners who have retained the same rank must wait five years to become eligible again.
Process






Applications/nominations are to be made to the dean/director on the form provided. Applications must be in required
format to be considered (See Nomination Guidelines). Self-nominations are encouraged.
Each dean/director will appoint a faculty committee (or use the college/division research committee) to select nominees
in each faculty rank.
The college/division will submit its nominees to the University Research Committee through the Vice President for
Research.
The University Research Committee will select a winner in each faculty rank.
Names of the selected Scholars of the Year will be sent to the President and the Vice President for Research, who will
announce the winners.
The awards will be presented at the annual Honors Convocation in April 2015.
Evaluation Criteria
The evaluation is based on the quality and quantity of scholarly and creative activities conducted by the FAU faculty member
over the past five years, with minimum of three years’ emphasis on work done at FAU, as evidenced by:
1. Completed Nomination Form -- typed only in the space provided (form attached)
2. Published books; refereed publications; articles; musical compositions; painting, sculpture; works of performing
art; presentations at meetings of professional societies that have not resulted in publication, display or
performance
3. External sponsors, where appropriate
4. Graduate student guidance, where appropriate
5 Service to professional organizations
6. Special awards or citations.
Award Structure

If a winner elects to take the award as a salary subsidy, the awarded amount will be subject to taxes and FICA.

If a winner elects to use the award to provide additional support for his or her research project, the Division of Research
will provide a 1:1 match (awardee salary reimbursement is excluded). If a winner elects this option, he or she must
provide a project plan and detailed budget for review and approval before the funds are released.

Nomination Guidelines

All materials should be submitted as a single PDF document.

All materials submitted must be scholarly work conducted in the last five years.

Nomination applications should be organized according to the following categories:
1.
Signed and completed nomination form.
2.
Current curriculum vitae (Maximum 5 pages)
In the section of the CV devoted to research, scholarly and creative activities, please categorize as follows
unless the nature of the scholarly activity requires additional categories:
* Refereed works (include the status – published; accepted; not published; submitted or review)
* Journal publications
* Books and chapters in books
* Presentations
* Other publications
* Non-refereed works (categorize as above)
* Contracts or grants received (include your role as principal investigator, co-principal investigator,
collaborator, advisor, etc.)
3.
Refereed publications, articles, presentations, books, and other creative and scholarly works, including
musical compositions, painting, sculpture; works of performing art (as specified for CV).
4.
Additional scholarly and creative activities (including information on panels or workshops you organized or
served on).
5.
Graduate student guidance, as applicable. Please specify your role (advisor, chair, member, etc.).
6.
Memberships in and service to professional organizations.
7.
External sponsors (total amount of grant funding received during the past five years, including a
statement explaining the level of difficulty with regard to receiving such an award).
8.
Scholarly citations (Applicants are encouraged to list the number of times publications have been cited and
provide the committee with evidence of these citations.)
9.
Letters of support from outside experts in the field of study, with supporting credentials, are encouraged.
Submit the signed college nominations by 5p.m. on February 13, 2015 to the Division of Research at
limited@fau.edu. Please provide all material as a single PDF document.
The file name and subject line of the email should read:
2015 Scholar of the Year Award followed by a hyphen and the college nominee’s last name.
