Microbiologist-in-Chief
Jointly appointed by the CEOs of Mount Sinai Hospital (MSH) and
University Health Network (UHN) and approved by their

Reports to:
Vice President of Mount Sinai Hospital and Vice President of
UHN Laboratory Board
Co-Chairs of the UHN/MSH Joint Steering Committee
MSH Medical Advisory Council
University of Toronto Chair Department of Laboratory Medicine
and Pathobiology for academic affairs
Qualifications:
Active Member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of
Ontario
Trainings and qualifications in Medical Microbiology as set forth
by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
Responsibilities:
 Assume and perform duties and responsibilities as defined by the Ministry of
Health and Long Term Care
 Provide medical leadership for all areas within the Microbiology Department
 Provide microbiology consultations to medical staff and other allied health
professions
 Liaison with hospital and laboratory licensing agencies on matters related to
Microbiology
 Liaison with medical staff on utilization, quality, accessibility and reliability of
laboratory services as they pertain to microbiology
 Assure laboratory standards of performance and practices are aligned and
accountable to all stakeholders, regulatory agencies and patients
 Liaison with hospital and departmental administrators on strategic planning
 Collaborate with administrative director in providing effective and efficient
services, allocation of resources, budget planning and control
 Ensure laboratory has sufficient qualified and competent personnel (both
professional and technical)

Position Summary: The Administrative Director holds primary responsibility for all
aspects of the day-to-day operations of the department.

Charge Technologist – Bacteriology and Specimen
Management
Reports to:

flexible. Required to work 1:6 weekends
Position Summary: This position is responsible for overseeing the day to day functions
of the bacteriology and specimen management area. Purchasing,
time sheets and scheduling are shared with Virology charge and
supervisor
Education:
ART or equivalent in Medical Microbiology. Current registration
with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario
in microbiology
Experience:
Minimum 10 years clinical laboratory experience in Microbiology
Skills/Qualifications:

Computer literacy required

Effective time management skills

Effective verbal and written communication skills

Effective problem solving skills
Ability to work as part of a team and independently when required
Duties and Responsibilities:

Supervise staff and distribute workload to ensure it is completed in a timely
manner.

Prepare monthly schedules to ensure adequate staffing. Ensure adequate
coverage during coffee and meal breaks.

Provide guidance and coaching to staff Assist in the orientation and training of
new staff.

Assist in the preparation of staff performance appraisals.

Ensure that quality control testing and verification is completed within the
section and signed off.


Implement and maintain a document control system

Maintain incident reporting system: coordinate the documentation,
investigation, review and follow up action on all incidents

Maintain the laboratory Quality Control program:
Responsible for the maintenance and upgrading of the SCC Soft quality
control module
Train staff in the data entry and verification of QC records
Monitor completion of all QC records
Supervise the QC bench technologist and provide training as required

Coordinate Quality Assurance Committee meetings
Prepare agenda, schedule meetings, complete minutes and follow up on action
items

Lead the Quality Improvement Team to identify quality indicators and
perform audits

Participate in inter-departmental and external quality management teams.
Compile and present quality report at Quality Management Committee and
other as required

Coordinate the review and maintenance of Laboratory Manual:
Ensure that all sections of the manual are reviewed at least once a year
Keep printed, electronic and web manual up to date
Communicate changes to staff, client and users

Organize all lab accreditation and assessment programs (OLA, CAP,
QMPLS)
Ensure compliance to all accreditation requirements in collaboration with
management Coordination of proficiency testing programs
Complete lab licensing applications

Collaborate with management team to conduct client satisfaction surveys



 Support product research review and evaluation to guide purchase decision related
to assigned department
 Provides technical support, hardware and software for clinical and administrative
information systems
 Participates in the analysis and definition of requirements for information
technology applications
 Collaborates with other hospital departments and external clients as required for
successful implementation of hospital-wide and department specific projects.
 Actively participates in the Laboratory Information System User Group
 Remains informed of current issues, policies and procedures related to hospital
information management
 Maintains current knowledge base with respect to health care computing through
literature review, participation in continuing education and membership in
professional organizations
 Provides project management leadership for assigned hardware and software
upgrades
 Analyzes and recommends resolution of technical problems involving system
software components.
