1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Associate Dean, Curriculum, Assessment, and Student Engagement in the College of Liberal Arts
(CLA), assists the Dean in all matters relating to administration of the College. In particular, the
Associate Dean aids in the direction of curriculum and program development, oversees program
assessment for CLA, and is responsible for a wide variety of activities related to student concerns,
including academic progress, scholarships, advocacy, recruitment, and retention. The Associate Dean
is expected to work with the Dean to plan, promote, and develop innovative practices across the CLA
and to enhance an environment that supports academic excellence.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide

25% - Curriculum Oversight
 Develop curriculum and programs
 Assess departmental degree programs
 Participate in program review processes
 Represent the college on University Courses and Curriculum Committee and Core Curriculum
Board
25% - Student Engagement and Achievement
 Provide oversight of CLA advising, including supervision of Director of Advising, Recruitment,
and Retention as well as other CLA advisors
 Address and resolve student concerns, including grade appeals, exceptions, and complaints
 Oversee student recruitment, retention, progress to degree, and degree completion
 Review schedule and grade changes
 Oversee CLA scholarships, fellowships, and student awards, including participation in college
development efforts directed toward securing scholarship/fellowship funding
 Act as liaison with committees related to scholarships and other student services
25% - Special Projects and Assignments (as determined by Dean, including but not limited to)
 Promotion of the college and management of its web communications
 Representing the college and/or Dean's office on various other committees at diverse levels,
such as college planning committee and ad hoc subcommittees, VPUE associate deans’
committee, university search committees or task forces, K-16 or community outreach efforts
 Teaching resource management
20% - Scholarship and Research
 Pursue professional presentation and publication at the national level in academic specialty
5% - Teaching and Supervision of Students
 Supervise master’s and doctoral programs of study for graduate students in home department
and area of specialty
 Provide professional mentoring to master’s and doctoral students as a member of advisory
committees within home department and beyond (as outside member or graduate school
representative)
 As the Dean directs and department specifies, otherwise teach at the graduate level

3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Associate Dean plays a key role the operations of CLA, coordination of academic curriculum
activities in CLA departments, and in promoting faculty and student development. This is critical for
the College’s ability to operate as a first class liberal arts college. The individual must be flexible, take
initiative, and work independently, creatively, and efficiently with little direct supervision and with
considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment. The Associate Dean has broad latitude
for un-reviewed actions and is evaluated on long-term results of actions and broad policy
effectiveness. The incumbent recommends and influences long-term policies relating to major issues
of the College to the Dean.
Impact:
The judgments of the Associate Dean affect the image of CLA and its departments among current and
prospective students and among colleagues elsewhere in the University Decisions affect the
educational experience of individual students in CLA, particularly with regard to their program of study
and resolution of problems related to their studies. The incumbent’s ability to create good working
relationships with staff within the Dean's office affects the success of the unit. Positive or negative
decisions impact the level of involvement of various faculty and students in the work of the College
and the way the College relates to the rest of the University in areas such as curriculum, student
services, and core issues. Decisions also affect retention of students and student scholarships and
the nature of various issues, ideas, and projects presented to the Dean for his/her decision.
