FORM BBS14: LAB ROTATION AGREEMENT
Laboratory rotations are an important part of the graduate program, giving students the opportunity to experience
different research projects and allowing the faculty to assess the interests and aptitude of the students. To facilitate and
optimize the rotation experience for both the student and the faculty, it is expected that they meet prior to the start of
the rotation to discuss expectations, goals, requirements and laboratory guidelines.
The laboratory Rotation is a graded, credited course that requires commitment from both student and faculty. Faculty
must submit an evaluation of the students’ performance, and discuss the evaluation with the student.
Pursuant to the University of Massachusetts Intellectual Property policy (DOC. T96-040;
http://www.umassmed.edu/uploadedfiles/Intellectual_Property_UMW.doc) laboratory data and laboratory
notebooks (classified as non-exempted scholarly work) remain the property of the University of Massachusetts Medical
School.
Students must register for two lab rotations each semester in their first year. The two rotations may be in the same lab,
or in two different labs. The faculty and student are expected to discuss whether there are openings in the next
academic year for thesis research in the faculty’s laboratory
First-Year students who select early entry will complete a six-week Laboratory Rotation (July and August).
Students may take two or more consecutive rotations in the same laboratory, but must rotate in two different labs prior
to selecting a Thesis Advisor and Program.
For each rotation, student must provide the Laboratory Rotation faculty advisor (graduate faculty sponsoring the
student’s rotation) and research group with a written report or an oral presentation of the rotation research. The
selection of written or oral presentation, and the specifications for each, are at the discretion of the Rotation Advisor.
