1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Laboratory Manager for the Anatomy and Advanced Surgical Training (AST) is responsible for
overseeing, managing and performing the collection, transport, embalming, tracking and disposal of
cadaveric material that is received through the Anatomical Donation Program (ADP) at the University
of Nevada School of Medicine (UNSOM) for both undergraduate and graduate programs. The position
is responsible for all aspects associated with the use of the Anatomy Laboratory and the AST
Laboratory under the supervision of the Director of Anatomy Education in the Physiology and Cell
Biology Department in UNSOM.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide
enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage
first with heading and then bulleted information).
35% - Anatomical Material Management
 Obtain, prepare, disperse, and dispose of anatomical material for UNSOM and other Nevada
System of Higher Education (NSHE) institutions
 Train and supervise the embalming of cadavers in Las Vegas, a duty/responsibility that will
increase as Las Vegas gets closer to opening a new Medical School
 Work closely with University Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) to maintain the safety of
the lab and its users with respect to radiation levels, level 1 biosafety organisms and toxic
vapor levels
20% - Anatomy Teaching Facility Management
 Clean, organize, and maintain the anatomy teaching facility including dissection and autopsy
tables and all of the models, prosections, lab coats and instruments associated therewith
 Develop and maintain a coding system that allows for 100% accuracy as to the location and
state of use of various cadaveric parts
 Create and maintain a scheduling system for end users and staffing of all training sessions
 Oversee medical students using the Lab
20% – AST Operations Management
 Manage the operations of the AST Laboratory which includes maintaining contracts with users,
scheduling complex use of Lab, and ensuring availability and use of equipment
 Maintain logs of cadaveric materials, handle Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and order
required lab equipment
15% - Inventory Management
 Maintain inventory of and order chemicals, gloves, lab coats, dissection instruments and other
unforeseen necessities, as required to keep the lab running smoothly and efficiently
 Develop effective handling, use and disposition of the cadaveric material to maximize value
 Maintain the inventory necessary to accommodate any upcoming events
 Track and allocate funds for new lab purchases
5% - Teaching Materials Preparation
 Assist in the preparation of teaching materials for UNSOM, including but not limited to, videos,
prosection material, and plastinated specimens, as needed by the Director of Anatomy
Education
 Handle exam set-up, administration, and break down after event

5% – Regulation Compliance
 Be knowledgeable in the internal workings of the ADP and the rules and regulations
associated with the Uniform Anatomical Gift act as it pertains to the use of cadaveric material
for educational purposes
 Be available to answer questions on the above in the absence of the Director of the ADP
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
Assignments performed by the employee are highly varied and require the individual to be flexible and
resourceful in completing tasks. The position has a significant amount of independence where longterm consequences could be detrimental to the viability of the program. The usefulness of a donated
body can be quite variable depending on the age, size, and length of time prior to embalming thereby
requiring the embalmer to make decisions as to the proper embalming method or even potential value
to the program. Any newly developed embalming techniques must pass strict Occupational Safety
Hazards Administration (OSHA) safety regulations and therefore require extensive knowledge of
permissible toxic vapor levels. The individual is the primary contact with the family of the deceased to
answer questions related to the use of the body in the education of medical students and doctors.
This can be a sensitive topic requiring care and thoughtfulness. The individual assists donors to the
ADP on an as-needed basis when questions arise when Director is unavailable. The position consults
with the Director of the Anatomy Education regarding new developments related to ongoing
advancement of the Anatomy program.
Impact:
Inadequate performance has a detrimental effect on the achievement of objectives related to UNSOM
and PCB goals. Failing to adhere to state, county, federal laws and regulations could have legal
implications for UNSOM and the University. Failure to perform as expected could result in loss of
accreditation, failure to meet standards, or failure to provide quality service to staff and students. Fail
to perform would also decrease revenues from the AST Laboratory.
4. Describe the knowledge, skills (to include cognitive requirement and verbal and written
communication), and abilities (to include task complexity, problem solving, creativity and
innovation) essential to successful performance of this job (in bullet format).
Knowledge of:
 Internal workings of an anatomical laboratory and the rules and regulations associated with the
Uniform Anatomical Gift act as it pertains to the use of cadaveric material for educational
purposes
 Various embalming techniques
 Lab equipment that requires special training, i.e., high definition cameras, radiation producing
equipment, embalming pumps, cadaver lift devices, steam cleaners, fixed and portable
sterilizers
 Objectives and processes utilized by faculty in medical and academic programs
 State and federal laws, regulations, and policies concerning environmental compliance
requirements as they relate to laboratory processes and facilities including associated safety
practices, work practices and emergency response and management procedures
