Hello Class of 2019! Congratulations on becoming part of Temple University School of Medicine! We look forward to welcoming you to the TUSM community on the first day of your orientation, August 3, 2015. We hope you enjoy your summer as you prepare for the next exciting and challenging chapter of your lives. This document includes the following: Requirements for matriculation Orientation and White Coat Ceremony information Transportation and parking information Tuition and financial aid information Link to Medical Student Handbook There are several ways by which you will receive information regarding medical school. Formal information prior to matriculation will be provided through the password protected ‘TempleMedOnline’ –TMO – at: https://tmo.temple.edu/index.cfm. Additionally, a Facebook group has been created for your class at Temple University School of Medicine, Class of 2019 where you’ll be able to find regular updates. We also want to mention that we recognize the value of social media which provide many ways to communicate. We ask that you remember your professional responsibility as a TUSM community member and future health care provider when involved in social networks. Thank you very much and again, Congratulations! GENERAL INFORMATION Orientation Schedule – Orientation will be held from Monday, August 3rd through Thursday, August 6th. Each day will begin at 8am and Orientation activities are over by the late afternoon. A social event will be held each evening. The entire schedule will be made available prior to your orientation. White Coat Ceremony – We look forward to officially welcoming you to the profession of medicine during the White Coat Ceremony on Friday, August 7th at 10am. The Ceremony will be held in the Temple Performing Arts Center on Temple’s main campus. Forms regarding the ceremony that you will need to complete will be posted in June. Each student will automatically receive four tickets at Orientation. If you need additional tickets, we will assist you with that when they are distributed on Monday August 3rd. Summer Reading Assignment: All incoming medical students are asked to read one of three books which will be discussed at Orientation. A description of the book choices will be available in June. You must sign up for one of the books on the google doc sent by email. TRANSPORTATION SEPTA Pass Information: A discounted SEPTA semester pass is available through the University. Information and the application can be found at the following link starting in August: http://bursar.temple.edu/students/septa-pass-program The pass is valid from August 24, 2015 through December 17, 2015 so you will need to purchase weekly SEPTA passes for the first few weeks of the fall semester. Parking – Information for parking registration will be posted to TMO once it is made available in July. Parking passes are sold on a first come, first serve basis. TUITION / FEES / FINANCIAL AID Tuition and Fees – Everyone has had tuition and fees “assessed” in Banner, although “tuition bills” are not officially generated until July 27, 2015. Tuition and fees are set in June of each year by the Board of Trustees and will be announced via the Bursar’s website. Some of you may experience delays with financial aid processing and have “late fees” assessed. If this is the case, the fees will be l be removed from your account. Financial Aid – o The Office of Student Financial Services is currently packaging first year medical students. You will use Self Service Banner (SSB) to view your financial aid award. In SSB, you must accept the award and complete other requirements listed on the SSB financial aid status tab(s). o Please complete the Stafford loan master promissory note (MPN) online process via Direct Loan website at www.studentloans.gov once you have accepted your financial aid award. You will select Temple University – 003371 as your school choice on the MPN. Please retain a pdf copy for your records and future reference if required. You will also need to complete the entrance interview process via the Direct Loan website for the Stafford loan in addition to the MPN. If you do not complete these two steps your Stafford loan funds will not be disbursed to your Temple account. o Entrance interviews are completed for Stafford and gradPLUS loans on the Direct Loan website, www.studentloans.gov. o For students who have completed all financial aid paperwork and are waiting for your refund, the University has emergency loans available up to $4,000. These emergency loans are available once class begins and do not have interest. Information on obtaining emergency loans will be discussed at Orientation. HEALTH INFORMATION Student Health Forms – please try to complete your physical prior to arrival and send the completed form to Student Health. If you cannot, you will be able to obtain a physical at TUSM for $25. However you may find it difficult once you begin your first year studies. It is in your best interest to complete the physical prior to your arrival. TUSM Student Health Appointments for Physicals can only be scheduled AFTER Orientation has begun. Student Health Forms are available here. o Prematriculation Letter Link o Immunization Letter Link – please mail immunization records to the HSC campus student health address, not the address in the letter. o Immunication Record Link – please return prior to matriculation o Physical Form Link – please return prior to matriculation o Authorization to Release Information FROM Student Health Services Link o Authorization to Release Information TO Student Health Services Link o Flu Shot Fact Sheet Link PPDs – every student will have PPD placed and read during Orientation. If you have had a positive PPD or have a contraindication to receiving a PPD, you can discuss that with the student health officials during Orientation. TITERS/Immunizations – TUSM requires a record of Immunization as well as a record of Titers as outlined on the Health Form. If you are able to complete the Immunization/Titers prior to Orientation, please send the completed form to Student Health. If you are unable to get your Titers or the cost is prohibitive, you can get the Titers done during Orientation (the day and time will be on the Orientation schedule) at approximately $110 for all 5 titers. Any needed immunizations can be done at Student Health for a cost of $30 – $80 for each immunization. Services through the Student Health Services at TUSM are only available after Orientation has begun and are at a significantly discounted rate for Temple students. Please remember compliance with this requirement is a professional responsibility. Student Health appointments for Immunizations can only be scheduled AFTER Orientation has begun. Health Insurance – All medical students are required to have health insurance during their enrollment at Temple University School of Medicine. The University provides multiple levels of coverage through Independence Blue Cross. Coverage is from September 1, 2015 through August 31, 2016. Open enrollment will begin in September. If you have coverage through an outside source, you need to complete a health insurance waiver form which is available on line during the Open Enrollment period. Information about health insurance coverage also will be provided during orientation. You will not be able to enroll or waive until August. We will keep you informed about what you need to do. UPDATES We will send you the names of our student orientation coordinators very soon and they will be happy to answer questions and assist you with additional information.
