2014 Term Student Director Position Description and Responsibilities The Duke Catholic Center has undergraduate Student Directors. All of these positions are “equal” in responsibility, status, and remuneration. The Student Directors work as a team with each other, with the Campus Ministers, the Business Manager, the Peer Ministry Coordinator and the Development Director. Being a Student Director is a profoundly important privilege and responsibility. As the Bible says, we do not take this task upon ourselves; rather God calls us to ministry and God gives the grace to complete it. Confident, therefore, that God is calling and will empower those who are discerned to be the Student Directors for the coming year, all of us at the Duke Catholic Center look forward to an exciting, dynamic, productive and prayerful year! You will truly serve as a “director.” You will be given large and important areas of responsibility to oversee. You will develop and hone your people and management skills. You will develop administrative skills, such as working within a budget and scheduling facilities and people’s time. You will become an excellent delegator, cheerleader, and encourager. You will find yourself mediating disputes and helping your peers in stressful situations. You will have to know how to enter into constructive dialogue with the professional staff and how to take direction from them. You will work in the sometimes awkward context of being both a friend to and “supervisor” for other students. You will also have to be careful to take care of your own needs in constructive and life-giving ways. Most importantly, you have to pray. Liturgical and group praying is essential. But even more important is the need to have a lively personal prayer life for yourself. You will need to pray for each other on a daily basis, as well as seeking spiritual guidance to nurture your own development. You will need to pray for the professional staff here at the Catholic Center. All this depends on your own personal relationship with God. Nurture that relationship before and above all other things. Being a Student Director means that you will be a very public minister of the Catholic Christian faith. You will want to live your life in accord with the Gospel message and the teachings of the Church. Understand that students – especially younger students – will look to you for example and permission. Invite God to be part of every dimension of who you are, guiding you, directing you, and protecting you. Of course, you will continue to be a full-time student at Duke. Giving sufficient time to your schoolwork is vitally important to being an effective Student Director. It’s important to “walk the walk” if we are going to present the Catholic Center as an organization which is led by student leaders. Your grades ought not to suffer as a result of your involvement in the learning activity of being a Student Director. You will, of course, participate in other campus organizations, but Student Directors are expected to make the Catholic Center their priority. The time commitment for each Student Director position is dependent upon activities during the week or month. Some weeks will require greater amount of work time. If work is averaged over the year ten (10) hours per week is the expected time commitment to fulfill the responsibility of this position.
