1:1 Tuition in Essex: Summer 2014 Update
Lead Consultant: Marilyn Edwards
marilyn.edwards@essex.gov.uk
Introduction
We have been very pleased to see the number of schools continuing with One-to-One
Tuition and the impact this effective intervention is having on supporting vulnerable pupils to
make accelerated progress. From May 2014, there will be important changes to the way the
One-to-One Tuition is run, details below.
Changes from May 2014
Business Support:
Jacquie Pirrie, our Business Support Administrator for One-to-One Tuition will be leaving
Essex County Council on 23rd May. We would like to thank Jacquie for the dedication and
support she has given to the One-to-One Tuition programme. We know many of you have
found her help and advice very valuable. From 23rd May , please contact Marilyn Edwards
Marilyn.edwards@essex.gov.uk with any queries.
Tutor Lead Support:
Tuition Lead meetings will continue to be held termly as we know you find these valuable to
keep informed about One-to-One Tuition and to meet with other Tuition Leads. The
Summer term Tuition Lead Update meeting will be held on 1st July at the Chelmsford City
Football Club. At the update, Jo Vincent will be presenting the work she has done
involving parents in One-to-One Tuition through organising an evening of activities for
parents and pupils. Also at the meeting Highfields Primary, one of our research case-study
schools, will be talking about how they link One-to-One Tuition with learning and teaching in
the classroom, through involving parents and governors, use of resources and effective
communication. We will also give you the latest updates with the National Curriculum 2014.
To book a place on this and any future updates, please visit the Professional Development
Website www.mycourses.e-gfl.org. There will be a charge of £90 to attend this event.
Communication with Schools
The website www.essex.gov.uk/one-to-one tuition will now be the main communication
channel for informing schools about One-to-One Tuition. The termly newsletter will also be
posted on the website Details of tutor training, Tuition Lead meetings and other updates will
continue to be posted on the site.
Central Tutor training:
Central tutor training courses will still be running throughout the year. However, training can
also be delivered by our expert consultants to tutors in your school or network. Please see
details below. The next central tutor training course is “Effective practice in One-to-One
Tuition”. This popular course will be on 9th September at the Chelmsford City Football Club
from 9.30 to12.00. The course is suitable for anyone new to tuition or for tutors who wish to
refresh their practice. The content will be similar to the previously run “Tuition Pedagogy”
course. Comments from delegates who have attended this course:
“A highly informative session with some useful ideas to apply to one to one tutoring
sessions” (delegate – December 2013).
To book a place on this and any future course, please visit the Professional Development
website www.mycourses.e-gfl.org . There will be a charge of £90 to attend the course.
Bespoke Tutor Training
Our consultants are available to deliver tutor training tailored to the needs of the tutors in
your school or network. If you have a number of tutors in your school or network, this may
be more cost effective than tutors attending central training. The consultancy rate is
currently £300 for half a day, £580 for a whole day. Comments from schools that have had
bespoke tutor training are: “Very informative, good ideas to engage with the learner and
facilitating progress” “Informative, interesting and some new ideas, approaches. Well
worthwhile”. Popular training opportunities have been: The structure and pedagogy of Oneto-One Tuition; activities to engage pupils in reading, writing or maths; using graphic novels
and film in English tuition; using a visual approach to mathematics tuition; using your
school’s inside and outside environment to engage pupils in tuition. To discuss your
requirements and book consultancy, please contact Marilyn.Edwards@essex.gov.uk
Registration of pupils:
The site for registering pupils www.essex121.net will be discontinued from 1st September.
Thank you for registering pupils on the site. This has been very valuable to us in the past in
tracking the impact of One-to-One Tuition on the progress and attainment of vulnerable
pupils.
Funding 2014 /2015
Letters were sent to Headteachers at the beginning of this term informing of the amount of
funding available for One-to-One Tuition. If you would like further information about how
this funding could be used, please contact Marilyn.edwards@essex.gov.uk
Employing Tutors Guidance
We have been informed by HR that from September 2013, the suggested payment for
tutors, in line with the original national roll out, increased from £25.56 to £25.82 per hour.
We have updated this and other information in the “Employing Tutors Guidance” document,
available on our website www.essex.gov.uk/one-to-one-tuition, on the HR guidance page.
Linking One-to-One Tuition with learning and teaching in the classroom
The research project on effective ways of linking teaching and learning in the tuition session
with learning and teaching in the classroom is now complete. The report and four case
studies can be found on our website www.essex.gov.uk/one-to-one-tuition on the “Sharing
Practice” page. The documents are in an easy-to-read format and make interesting reading.
We hope you find them useful in developing the links in your own school. One of the four
case study schools will be talking about the way they link tuition with classroom practice at
our Tuition Lead Update meeting in June. Please see details above.
Thank you for your continuing support with One-to-One Tuition. We look forward to
meeting with those of you able to attend the Tuition Lead Update on 1st July. Book soon!
