FOR THE FINE ARTS
(Guidelines and Application)

Purpose of Award
To recognize high achieving full-time African American and Latino undergraduate who are enrolled or admitted into
the Art & Design program at Montclair State University and who demonstrate outstanding artistic achievement.
The amount of the award is determined by the CART Scholarship Committee, in conjunction with the dean and
depends, in part, on the accrued interest in the scholarship fund. (Previous awards have ranged from $500 to
$2000.) Financial need is not a consideration; however, awarded funds must be applied toward tuition and fees and
will be deposited into the recipient’s tuition account.
Eligibility and Guidelines
To be eligible, you must:
a) Be a prospective or currently enrolled Montclair State University African American or Latino graduate or
undergraduate student, or a prospective MSU student; with a major (or intended major) in Art & Design;
b) Be in good academic standing and hold at least a 2.5 GPA.
c) Be enrolled full time, carrying a minimum of 12 semester hours and planning to be full-time during the
semester(s) for which the award is requested (note: students carrying 9 credits during their student teaching
semester may still qualify). Must apply the award toward MSU tuition and fees.
d) Have at least one year of full-time academic study at MSU beyond this spring semester
e) Be able to provide documentation of demonstrated achievement in field of study.
Scholarships are granted for a period of one year, during which recipients must maintain good academic standing.
(The scholarship will be forfeited if you: 1) you do not enroll full-time at the University; or 2) your GPA cum falls
below 2.5 or 3) became subject to academic probation, suspension, or dismissal.)
Candidates are to be recommended to the CART Scholarship Committee by the department scholarship advisor.
The Committee will be comprised of one or more faculty members of the fine arts department, a representative of
the Miller Scholarship Fund, and the dean or designee. The college committee will determine the final award
recipients.

Application Instructions
Submit the following to Morehead Hall 241 by no later than 4:30 pm of the deadline date.
A. COMPLETED APPLICATION
B. SUPPORT LETTERS FROM TWO FACULTY MEMBERS FAMILIAR WITH YOUR WORK
It is advisable to show faculty your application and “work sample” when requesting letters. If faculty prefer
to provide letters “in confidence”, they can instead give them to you in a sealed envelope
C. CREATIVE WORK SAMPLE(S) which demonstrate accomplishments within your major field of study.
Formats generally may include CD’s, DVD’s, Flashdrives, manuscripts, term papers, programs, show
announcements, Web URLs, etc.


Work submitted in Audio or Video formats must be limited to a 5-minute segment that highlights you as
an individual where possible. You should introduce yourself and briefly introduce the piece(s) to be
performed. If multiple performers are involved, you may wish to indicate that you are e.g. “the dancer
wearing black” (or specify in Clarifying Notes.)
All materials must be labeled with your name and the scholarship for which you are applying. While
materials will be handled with the best of care, the College of the Arts is not liable for their loss or
damage. Applicants will be notified after the review to pick up materials intended for return.
Content:
 Art and Design applicants should submit a Portfolio of 10-15 works (original work will not be accepted.)
 Theatre, Dance, Music and Television and Digital Media applicants should submit documentation of
their participation in a production or performance.
