About the Blyth Centre
Music and visual arts are core activities at Imperial College. Despite the fact that the
department is a non-academic one, music and visual arts happen at the very highest
levels. The College currently boasts five orchestras, six choirs, a wind band and a jazz
big band, as well as many smaller ensembles. The professional Lunchtime Concert
series (at South Kensington and Hammersmith campuses) is one of the jewels in the
College's musical crown, attracting as it does, some of the UK's most respected
1
musicians (regular artists include the Belcea, Maggini, Coull and Badke quartets,
Schubert Ensemble of London, Onyx Brass and Noriko Ogawa). There are also
Scholarships and a Joint Degree course in association with the Royal College of Music,
as well as a Bursary scheme.
The visual arts programme, run by the Blyth Gallery Curator, is of a similarly high calibre
with monthly exhibitions by professional and student artists as well as regular
workshops.
The purpose-built Blyth Centre, situated on the fifth floor of the Sherfield Building,
houses 11 practice and ensemble rooms, an art gallery, a suite of offices and a small
kitchen. The music rooms are in huge demand by the many hundreds of practising
musicians on campus as well as by occasional external users.
