The Douglass Difference & NJSFWC Honoring the continuing relationship between NJSFWC and Douglass College, 11 scholarships for female students choosing Douglass are supported by donations from Women’s Clubs across New Jersey. Fine Art/Art History Scholarship – Established in 1954 to be awarded to Douglass student majoring in Art. Funded by club contributions and funds from District Achievement Days where Arts/Creative contests are held. Awarded in 2007-2008 were two $1,275 scholarships. Performing Arts Scholarship – Established in 1953 to be awarded to Douglass students majoring in Drama or Speech. Funded by club contributions and funds from District Performing Arts Festivals. Awarded in 2007-2008 was one $1,220 scholarship. Journalism/English Scholarship – Established in 1969 to be awarded to students at Douglass majoring in English or Journalism. Funded by club contributions and funds from District Performing Arts Festivals, Creative Writing Days and the State Creative Writing Contest. Awarded in 2007-2008 was one $1,475 scholarship. Meta Thorne Waters Scholarship – Established in 1932 and awarded to Douglass students majoring in music for coaching fees in their own specialties of voice or instrument. Funded by club contributions and funds from District Performing Arts Festivals. Awarded in 2007-2008 was one $665 scholarship. Science – Natural or Applied Scholarship – begun in 1953 as the Home Economics Scholarship, it was broadened in 1992 to Nutrition-Management-Sciences and renamed in 2003 to the current title. Awarded to a student majoring in one of the fields of study covered by the scholarship. Funded by club contributions. Awarded in 2007-2008 was one $1,070 scholarship. Girls’ Career Institute Scholarship – Established in 1954 to be awarded to incoming Freshman Douglass students who have attended Girls’ Career Institute. Funds provided by club contributions. Awarded in 2007-2008 was one $900 scholarship. Federation Scholarship – Established in 1952 to be awarded to Douglass students who have completed their first year in any field; based on need scholarship, and promise of future achievement. Funds provided by club contributions. Awarded for 2007-2008 was one $950 scholarship. Continuing Education Scholarship – Established in 1975 for mature women, returning for part-time study at Douglass. Assistance, provided by club contributions, is based on financial need. Funds are available for books, tuition, public transportation or child care. Awarded in 2007-2008 was one $1,270 scholarship. Louie C. Francisco International Exchange Scholarship – Established in 1940 for women foreign student(s) (preferably Latin American) studying at Douglass College for their Junior Year; restructured in 1986, should there be no foreign student applicant, the scholarship may be awarded to an American student (Douglass preferred) to study abroad through the Rutgers “Junior Year Abroad Program”. Funded by club contributions. Awarded in 2007-2008 was one $530 scholarship. Political Science Scholarship – Established in 1979 as the Margaret M. Hickey Scholarship for Political Science. Awarded to Douglass students majoring in political science. Funded by the Public Affairs Day and club contributions. Awarded in 2007-2008 were three $1,100 scholarships. Cecilia Gaines Holland Volunteer Service Scholarship – Established in 2008 to recognize the volunteer service commitment of a Douglass student. Funded by club contributions.
