International Student Scholarships There are three types of IIS/ESL scholarships available for international students, Effective October 1, 2004. 1. Global Studies scholarships: Merit based. 1.1. Eligibility: Murray State University Global Scholarships are awarded annually on a competitive basis to applicants who are citizens or permanent residents of countries outside the United States. Applicants must first apply and be admitted to an undergraduate or graduate program at Murray State University and submit evidence of the ability to pay the expenses that remain after the scholarship is awarded. Students who have already begun studies at Murray State University are not eligible. The Global Scholarship may not be used in conjunction with a graduate assistantship or other financial support from Murray State University. 1.2. Number of scholarships offered per year: 5 1.3. Available for both Graduates and Undergraduates from every country 1.4. Amount of money offer: The Murray State University Global Scholarship provides a waiver of the non-resident portion of Murray State University tuition. The scholarship is renewable each semester (up to eight semesters for undergraduate study or up to four semesters for graduate study) on the condition that recipients maintain a grade point average of at least 2.0 in undergraduate degree programs or 3.0 in graduate degree programs at Murray State University. The scholarship may be used during summer sessions at Murray State University. Recipients will be eligible to seek on-campus employment of up to 20 hours per week while classes are in session and full-time during academic breaks and vacations. Please note, however, that (a) receipt of the scholarship does not ensure the availability of on-campus employment; (b) recipients of the scholarship will be expected to contribute to and participate in intercultural programs on campus on request. . 2. International ESL scholarships: 2.1. Eligibility: International students who take ESL programs at Murray State University for at least 1 term prior to their degree program study. Recipients should maintain their academic standings to be at least an “average”. Students who already met the English proficiency requirement but prefer to take the ESL level 6/University Preparation at least 1 term are also eligible. 2.2. Number of scholarships offered per year: 50 2.3. Available for both Graduates and Undergraduates from every country 2.4. Amount of money: 2.4.1. Undergraduate: Total of $8,000 ($1,000/semester for a maximum of 8 semesters and minimum of 6 semesters of full time enrollment). Those students able to finish their degrees in fewer than 8 semesters will be able to apply the remainder of the scholarship to the last semester. For example, if students finish their degrees in 7 semesters, the 7th semester scholarship will be the sum of the 7th and 8th semester scholarships. 2.4.2. Graduate: Total of $4,000 ($1,000/semester for the maximum of 4 semesters and minimum of 3 semesters of full time enrollment). Those students able to finish their degrees in fewer than 4 semesters will be able to apply the remainder of the scholarship money to the last semester. For example, if students finish their degrees in 3 semesters, the 3rd semester scholarship will be the sum of the 3rd and 4th semester scholarships. 3. International IIS scholarships: 3.1. Eligibility: International students who do not take ESL programs at Murray State University prior to their degree programs. Recipients should maintain their academic standings to be at least an “average” 3.2. Number of scholarships offered per year: 50 3.3. Available for both Graduates and Undergraduates from every country 3.4. Amount of money: 3.4.1. Undergraduate: Total of $4,000 ($500/semester for the maximum of 8 semesters or 4 years of full time enrollment). Those students able to finish their degrees in fewer than 8 semesters will be able to apply the remainder of the scholarship to the last semester. For example, if students finish their degrees in 7 semesters, the 7th semester scholarship will be the sum of the 7th and 8th semester scholarships. 3.4.2. Graduate: Total of $2,000 ($500/semester for the maximum of 4 semesters or 2 years of full time enrollment). Those students able to finish their degrees in fewer than 4 semesters will be able to apply the remainder of the scholarship money to the last semester. For example, if students finish their degrees in 3 semesters, the 3rd semester scholarship will be the sum of the 3rd and 4th semester scholarships. 4. Special 10 Countries Graduate Student Scholarship 4.1. Eligibility: International graduate students from 10 countries of Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China, Thailand, Indonesia, Turkey, Cyprus, Morocco, and India. Recipients should maintain their academic standings to be at least an “average B” 4.2. Number of scholarships offered per year: unlimited 4.3. Available for Graduate students from the 10 specified countries beginning the Fall semester of Academic year of 2005-2006. 4.4. Amount of money: 4.4.1. Tuition fee deduction at the amount of one-third (1/3) of non-resident tuition fee. This scholarship is offered for every semester of full-time graduate enrollment up to the maximum of 4 semesters or 2 years. For Academic year of 2005-2006, the amount of scholarship offered is $3,900/year (as non-resident tuition rate of $11,700/year). Note: Students from Belize are eligible for other scholarship programs.
