Faculty-Student Enrichment Experiences

FACULTY-STUDENT ENRICHMENT EXPERIENCES GRANT
The Humanities Advisory Committee would like to help support Humanities departments who wish
to provide enrichment experiences for their students. The HAC will provide up to $1,000 per
department per academic year to support activities in which faculty and students are engaging
together in humanities-related activities beyond the Otterbein campus. We imagine these funds
supporting activities such as:



A group of students and faculty in a Philosophy class traveling to see a lecture by Cornell West
in Cleveland
A group of students and faculty in an Art History class traveling to see an exhibit at an art
museum that would support their critical discussion of some period in art history.
A group of English majors who are considering graduate school joining a faculty member at a
regional conference of the MLA.
While the activities can be connected to the work of a particular class, they do not need to be. In
the event of activities connected to the work of a particular class, these funds should be used to
support some “extra” event and are not to be used in place of funds that would normally be
provided by the department. Departments can apply multiple times a year, but are only eligible to
receive $1,000 over the course of the academic year. There is no deadline for applications; the HAC
will consider applications on a rolling basis.
To be eligible for funding, activities must meet the following criteria:
(a) They must involve at least one Otterbein faculty member and at least 4 students (the
students do not need to be majors or minors in the relevant department);
(b) The activity must support work in the humanities; visits to museums, concerts, etc. are
allowed so long as they support work in the “history, theory, and criticism of the arts”;
(c) They must occur during the academic year;
(d) They must receive the approval of the relevant Department Chair; and
(e) Upon completion of the event, an expense report (including receipts) as well as a narrative
report describing the outcomes of the experience must be submitted to the HAC (c/o Mary
Kay Beougher). This report needs to be submitted within 30 days after the date of the
event.
These criteria are necessary but not sufficient conditions for receiving funding; merely meeting the
above criteria does not guarantee funding. The following departments are eligible for the funds:
Art
English
Foreign Languages
History and Political Science
Music
Religion and Philosophy
Theater and Dance
Funds can be used to pay for travel expenses, admission tickets, and up to $15 per person per day
for meals.
The National Endowment for the Humanities’ Definition of the Humanities
In the act that established the National Endowment for the Humanities, the term humanities
included, but is not limited to, study of the following disciplines: history; philosophy; languages;
linguistics; literature; archeology; jurisprudence; the history, theory, and criticism of the arts; ethics;
comparative religion; and those aspects of the social sciences that employ historical or philosophical
approaches.
Work in the creative or performing arts--such as the writing of fiction or poetry, painting,
sculpture, musical composition or performance, acting, directing, and dance--is not eligible for
support by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Those interested in support in these areas
should write or call the National Endowment for the Arts. Critical, historical, and theoretical
studies of the arts, however, are eligible for NEH support.
Studies in the social sciences that are historical or philosophical in approach or that involve
questions of interpretation or criticism traditionally in the humanities are also eligible for NEH
support, as are studies that use the disciplines of the humanities to interpret, analyze, or assess
science and technology.
