Academic Dress
Each university has a distinctive set of academic robes (ie gown, hood and hat) for the
degrees it awards. The blue satin damask which features in the hoods of all Surrey
degrees is specifically identified with this University and is specially woven to order.
Graduates of the University
Graduates wear hoods which vary in design depending upon the level of award
(undergraduate or postgraduate) and the type of degree (Arts, Science, Education,
Research). Gowns are black for all University of Surrey degrees except Doctorates
and, with the exception of Doctorate awards, the appropriate hat is a black cloth
Mortar Board. Details of the hoods are as follows:
