Leaders! (The best job in SUP)
The Leaders! Summer Program Director is responsible for (1) preparing for Leaders!
summer programming, (2) general administration and running of Leaders! program
operations, and (3) completing follow-up work the following fall. Director
responsibilities include, but are not limited to, supporting Junior Counselors in
developing job, life and community leadership skills; fundraising a year-round budget of
$50,000; supporting Leaders! participants in devising an overall Leadership curriculum
and JC Training; building and maintaining relationships with community partners;
supporting and training Directors and Senior Counselors in working with JCs; financial
management; supporting JCs in planning the youth-led elements of the Midsummer
Celebration; teamwork with the SUP director committee; coaching camp directors and
senior counselors on working with Junior Counselors; working with and holding
accountable other members of the Leaders! Team; and compliance with all relevant
PBHA, Harvard University, city, and state licensing and safety policies.
A Leaders! Summer Director’s commitment lasts from the date of hiring until new
Leaders! In addition, two Leaders! Program Directors are expected to remain during the
fall and spring of the 2010-2011 school year as directors of the term-time Leaders!
mentoring program. This period lasts roughly from December 2009 to May 2011. The
salary for a summer director will be no less than $3,700 for 12 weeks of summer
operation (1 week of prep work, 1 week of director training, 2 weeks of staff training, 7
weeks of camp and 1 Leaders! Week after camp). Note that significant additional
volunteer efforts are expected and required during the fall and spring terms for
preparation and follow-up. Directors attend SUP Director Committee Meetings, held
weekly throughout the spring, fundraising meetings, monthly PBHA Cabinet meetings,
meetings with individual director pairs, Midsummer planning meetings and must support
SUP and PBHA-wide efforts.
It should be understood that persons serving as SUP directors during the school term
assume these paid positions beginning in mid-June at the start of Senior Counselor
training. However, term time positions (including directing the Leaders! program) are of
a volunteer nature.

Late January 2010: SUP Director Intensive

the job: specific duties
I. FUNDRAISING
a) Writing a generic funding proposal, as well as specific funding proposals to foundations, corporations,
and Harvard University.
b) Soliciting program and PBHA alumni/ae, for example in the SUP phone-a-thon, as well as community
businesses and funding sources.
c) Working with the appropriate government agency representatives on in-kind donations.
d) Seeking out non-governmental in-kind donations such as food and free supplies.
e) Meeting grants requirements and the final reporting requirements of all funders in a timely fashion.
f) Abiding by all PBHA policies on solicitation of external sources.
g) Preparing a general final report.
II. COMMUNITY AND CLIENT RELATIONS
a) Working with professional staff to identify community resources and needs.
b) Developing and maintaining relationships with community leaders and the Greater Boston youth worker
community.
c) Facilitating relationships between junior counselors and program staff.
d) Recruiting clients, coordinating with term-time programs to ensure continuity and consistent delivery of
services.
e) Support JCs in getting involved with community-based activism and organizing efforts.
III. PBHA CABINET MEMBER
a) Attend Cabinet meetings once a month (Cabinet is the legislative body of the Phillips Brooks House
Association. As a director of a PBHA program, you are your program’s representative to and voice in
cabinet.)
b) Act as a representative voice for your program in PBHA c) Attend the SUP Phone-a-Thon and the SUP
Auction
IV. ADMINISTRATION OF THE LEADERS! PROGRAM
a)Work with camp directors to oversee the development of the Junior Counselor role within each camp
and creating support and accountability structures for JCs at camp.
b) Support Term-Time Leaders in developing and facilitating Leadership Workshops and JC Training.
c) Plan and facilitate junior counselor training, inter-camp JC meetings, camp rep meetings, the JC run
elements of the Midsummer celebration (Talent Show MCs, Community Builder Awards, Carnival Games,
Publicity, Community Action Project(s))
d) On-site Director and SC support and mediation, JC Curriculum and Teaching development,
V. DIRECTOR OF THE LEADERS PROGRAM
a) Recruit teenagers and mentors to the program
b) Plan twice-monthly meetings
c) Commit to mentoring a teenager for at least one hour a week
d) Support Leaders in finding Service Placements
e) Support mentors
