JOB SUMMARY The Orientation/Early Intervention Specialist serves families in the Parent Infant Program (PIP) for the Deaf/Hard-ofHearing in two capacities. First as an Orientation Specialist, a deaf individual who is a fluent American Sign Language (ASL) user,
partnering with a second deaf adult who uses listening skills and spoken language (LSL) as a primary communication mode. As a
team, they meet with new families enrolled in the Parent Infant Program to help parents better understand the lives of individuals
who are deaf or hard-of-hearing and how they communicate and interact within a hearing world. Together they present information
to families in their homes and are available for specific questions in the early months of involvement in the PIP program. The
orientation team also introduces the family to the preschool programs available to their child at the Utah School for the Deaf once
he/she is three years old. Orientation responsibilities will consume 50% of the job position. The second role is that of the Early
Intervention (EI) Specialist. In this role the incumbent works directly with families in their home on a weekly basis to help them
understand hearing loss and the impact it can have on a child’s communication and language development; the impact of having a
child in the family who is deaf or hard of hearing; the amplification and communication options available to their child;
communication and language skills and strategies to enhance communication, language, and auditory skills development, and
overall child development. Collaborates with other team members and with PIP staff within the program to ensure the child and
family receive coordinated and beneficial services until the child turns three, and coordinated services as the transition from early
intervention to preschool takes place. The EI Specialist may also have responsibility for either ASL/English or LSL toddler groups in
the Ogden and/or Salt Lake City areas. The toddler groups, held weekly, provide children with opportunities to participate in a group
setting and interact with other children who are deaf or hard-of-hearing and have more opportunities to have appropriate adult
language models; performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS Must be deaf, have fluent American Sign Language (ASL) skills, and have knowledge of Deaf culture. Bachelor's
degree in early childhood special education, early childhood, child/family studies, elementary education, with a Hearing Impaired
endorsement (birth-3) or (birth-5) and an Early Intervention II credential. Can obtain a Utah Teaching License or is working toward
licensure. License and endorsement must be obtained within three years from date of hire in order to be considered for continued
employment. Travel required (to orientation visits, home visits, meetings, workshops, etc.). Must have own transportation.
Successful completion of criminal background check is required for this position.
SALARY AND BENEFITS Salary based on Consultant Salary Schedule commensurate with education and experience. Benefits will
be limited to Social Security. The State requires employees to receive their pay through direct deposit or on a payroll debit card
account.
ASSIGNMENT PERIOD This is a part-time appointment. This position works a total of 672.5 hours per contract year over the course
of 42 (forty-two) weeks per year (average sixteen hours per week).
