BILINGUAL TEACHER PREPARATION PROGRAM (BTP2)
APPLICATION
INTRODUCTION:
The Bilingual Teacher Preparation Program will train currently employed Detroit Public Schools
educational technicians, substitute teachers, school service assistants and clerical staff who are bilingual for
teacher certification at the elementary or secondary level. This program will increase the number of certified
teachers who are able to meet the needs of Detroit Public Schools children from Arabic, Chaldean, Hmong,
Romanian and Spanish speaking communities. The program will operate over a three year period and will
be a collaborative effort of Detroit Public Schools’ Offices of Bilingual Education and Recruitment and
Employment Services and the Wayne State University College of Education.
REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must:








have completed a minimum of 60 credit hours toward a college degree;
be currently employed as a school service assistant, educational technician, clerical or non-certified
substitute teacher with Detroit Public Schools;
have a minimum of a 2.5 undergraduate grade point average to be admitted into the College of
Education;
successfully completed the Michigan Department of Education’s Basic Skills Test for admission into
the Wayne State University College of Education within the first year of the program;
have letters of recommendation solicited confidentially by Detroit Public Schools from a Supervisor
or principal;
provide a letter of support from t he directing teach;
have official transcripts from all colleges and universities on file; and
300 word essay (refer to page 3, item 6).

admission decision can be made.
My signature below confirms my final commitment to work for the Detroit Public Schools for a
minimum of five years after completing my certification program at Wayne State University. I
understand that if I choose to leave employment with Detroit Public Schools before complying with this
commitment, I will repay the entire amount of my tuition associated with my participation in the
Bilingual Teacher Preparation Program.
