Back to Top SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES WITH EARLY DEADLINES While most employers that hire 1Ls for summer positions will recruit during the Spring semester, a few employers begin recruiting 1Ls in late December/early January. Judicial Externships Students interested in judicial externships with the U.S. District Court and U.S. Court of Appeals should send a resume, cover letter and writing sample to individual judges as early as possible for consideration. In addition, applications are being accepted for the California Court of Appeal (see the job posting on Symplicity). Please refer to the Judicial Externship Handbook for more details. The handbook can be accessed online at http://law.usc.edu/academics/ops/intern.cfm Large Law Firms Large law firms also begin considering 1Ls early so students are advised to send resumes and cover letters over the holiday break. The NALP Directory (www.nalpdirectory.com) provides information on which firms consider 1Ls for summer employment, as well as contact information for recruiting managers at each firm. Back to Top ONLINE SUMMER JOB POSTINGS Symplicty, the CSO’s online career management system is your primary source for job postings. In October, the CSO emailed each 1L student their username and password information, as well as instructions for accessing Symplicity. When you log on, please go to the profile section and update your academic and personal information including geographical preferences. The system will automatically send job announcements regarding your geographical preferences via email. Please contact the CSO if you have any questions regarding Symplicity. Back to Top INITIAL 1L COUNSELING SESSIONS – JANUARY APPOINTMENTS We have set aside time in January for students who did not attend a 1L Initial Counseling Session with a CSO counselor in November or December. Please call the CSO at 213-740-7397 to schedule your session. Please note, you must meet with a CSO counselor if you plan to participate in Spring On Campus Interviews and/or Public Interest Career Day. Back to Top CONDUCTING CAREER RESEARCH OVER THE BREAK The holiday break is an ideal time for 1Ls to conduct career research on potential 1L summer employment opportunities and legal practice areas of interest. Here are two suggestions to help get you started: #1-Review the “Where Students Have Worked” section of your CSO binder. In this section you will find a comprehensive list of employers that have employed USC law students over the last 3 summers. Reviewing this list is a great way to identify potential summer employment opportunities. #2-Located in the “For Law Students Only” section of the CSO website are Practice Area Resources guides for 13 popular legal practice areas. These guides provide information on useful resources for students interested in learning more about a particular practice area. Back to Top CSO HOLIDAY HOURS Please note that the CSO will be closed starting Monday, December 25, 2006 and will reopen on Tuesday, January 2, 2007. Aside from these dates, the CSO will be open Monday-Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm. Back to Top
