Study Programmes - Economic Policy and Administration European Integration The Bachelor’s degree branch of study – European Integration gives students a basic knowledge of economics, management, business and public administration, as well as specific courses focusing on institutions, EU mechanisms and European law, issues of global and European integration, EU economic policy and taxation systems, regional policy, project preparation for accessing EU structural funds, and the English language in European integration. Graduates are equipped with basic knowledge of the economic and legal environment of the European Union, its institutions and policies. They will be able to find employment in public administration institutions, in business or at consultancy companies dealing with European integration or preparing for the realization of specific business plans or public projects utilizing EU policy tools. Students will gain skills in the utilization of territorial information, as well as practising selected analytical and other regional support methods for decision-making on the regional, city and municipality levels. The degree is designed in order to enable graduates to carry out the basic duties and tasks of first-line/middle management in public-sector institutions and commercial consultancy organizations focusing on local and regional development activities and projects. Graduates will find employment especially preparing documentation for development programmes, projects and measures taken at the local and regional levels. Graduates of the Bachelor’s degree will be able to continue their studies in selected follow-on economics-related Master’s degrees throughout the Czech Republic. Jan Sucháček, Ph.D. E mail: jan.suchacek@vsb.cz Public Economics and Administration The Bachelor’s degree branch of study – Public Economics and Administration allows students to acquire a knowledge of the basics of economic theory as well as the skills to recognize, formulate and evaluate the economic aspects of basic decision-making processes. In addition to a broadly conceived general base (consisting of management, marketing, company economics, law, etc.), studies also focus on the mechanisms of financing and administration in the public sector, the functioning of non-profit organizations in the civic sector, and the organization and tools of public administration in the Czech Republic and the EU, including basics of national, regional and municipal economics, social policy, and the use of territorial and administrative information systems. Graduates will be trained to carry out professions at all levels of public administration, i.e. in national administrative bodies, local government, sector administration, and institutions and organizations in both the public and private sector (especially municipal and regional authorities, central and territorial state administration, tax offices, the police, customs and excise offices, job centres, social welfare offices, health insurance offices, schools, hospitals, cultural facilities, the mass media, transport corporations, and technical infrastructure corporations). Graduates will be able to continue in their studies via follow-on Master’s degree programmes at many universities in the Czech Republic and abroad. The branch of study is taught only in Czech. E mail: petr.tomanek@vsb.cz Finance The aim of the Bachelor’s degree branch of study - Finance is to train future qualified professionals to carry out finance-related specialist work and to occupy mid-level finance managerial posts. The degree is designed in order to prepare graduates to work in financial divisions and financial management at nonfinancial institutions (manufacturing and commercial companies, state administration) and financial institutions (banks, investment and insurance companies). The degree focuses on giving students knowledge and practical skills in the following areas: financial management and decision-making in companies; cost management, calculations, pricing, accounting and taxation, financial and capital markets, commercial and investment banking, insurance. financial company management, financial risk management, investment decision-making, investment management, company valuation, financial modelling, taxation theory, financial, money and capital markets, management of commercial banks, investment and insurance companies, valuation of derivatives, financial assets portfolio management, international finance, international financial institutions, financial systems, fiscal and taxation systems Graduates of the Master’s degree subject Finance will find employment especially in the financial divisions of manufacturing and commercial companies, in professional posts in financial control, in managerial posts in banking and other financial market institutions, and as financial and tax advisors. Dana Dluhošová E mail: dana.dluhosova@vsb.cz National Economy The Bachelor’s degree branch of study – National Economy is based on a general foundation which is then complemented by a broad knowledge of economic policy, European Union economic policy, labour market economics, and regional economics. The degree is thus conceived in order to give its graduates the ability to orient themselves both theoretically and practically in the market economy; given this basis, graduates will be able to evaluate and deal with specific political economic problems and situations using the relevant professional knowledge. E mail: jaromir.gottvald@vsb.cz Economics Journalism The aim of the Bachelor’s degree branch of study Economics Journalism is to prepare students to work as journalists in the media (especially the economic and financial media) or in financial and administrative media management. In addition to professional training, the degree subject also provides its students with a good grounding for continuing studies at Master’s level – both in the existing Master’s degree programmes at the Faculty of Economics or in other Master’s media communication degrees. Graduates will be able to present basic information on economic theory and policy to the general public in a clear, expert and unbiased way, to interpret this information objectively, and also to participate in the financial and administrative management of small-scale newsrooms in all types of media (the periodical press, radio and television broadcasting, and the internet). On the basis of professional knowledge gained from the study of economics courses from the degree programme Economic Policy and Administration, as well as basic knowledge of communication processes within media communication, graduates will be able to popularize economic issues and thus to present them to the general public in an expert manner. This degree subject was introduced in response to general public demand and as part of efforts to introduce a more human dimension to the exact scientific framework of economic studies.
