Prof. Shubhada Bopegamage, has been co-ordinating research at the Enterovirus Laboratory and is a recognised guide at the Virology/Microbiology Department, Comenius University, Bratislava, Slovak Republic, since the year 2005. The Enterovirus laboratory of the Medical Faculty of SMU has laboratories which carry out basic Virological work, diagnostic methods, and animal house at BCL2, BCL2+ level. The laboratory is accredited and applies accredited methodology, and is actively involved in research on pathogenesis of enteroviral infected. The staff has basic degrees in MSc/PhD in Microbiology/Virology, and Assoc. Prof. In Public Health. The staff is involved in teaching/guiding, students at the Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD level, and co-ordination of International course for all NRC working with enteroviruses from the Slovak Republic with participation of the staff from the Czech Republic under the Twinning program. Human enteroviruses (HEV), which include coxsackieviruses, echo and polioviruses are commonly occurring human pathogens, which are spread by the oral route of infection. These viruses cause acute and chronic infections. Though surveillance of enteroviruses has become a mandatory instrument for the control of eradication of poliovirus, globally the other human enteroviruses and their disease manifestations have been relatively not taken into notice and maybe considered as challenges after polio eradication for which we are still unprepared due to lack of networking and knowledge. The methodology applied for these viruses, maybe applied in most diagnostic or research purposes Virological laboratories.
