DUAL ENROLLMENT
Jefferson Davis Community College allows high school students to take college courses
concurrently with high school classes and receive credit toward college and high school
graduation. Students may enroll in courses offered to the general population or courses may
be offered at designated times to accommodate dual enrollment students and their high
school schedules. Students are eligible to participate in the dual enrollment program if they
meet criteria set by the Alabama State Board of Education. Students must follow normal
JDCC rules and regulations and must pay all costs associated with attending college, such as
tuition, fees, and textbooks. Faculty who participate in the dual enrollment program are
employees of the college and meet criteria established by SACS.
Policy: This policy applies to dual enrollment high school students at JDCC. JDCC will
offer classes at the Brewton and Atmore campuses, and at high schools, if requested by the
principal concerned and when adequate personnel, facilities (e.g. laboratories) and resources
are available. Students must pay normal tuition textbooks, and fees as required by JDCC
policy. A student is eligible for dual enrollment/dual credit if he/she meets the following
criteria:






Student must meet the entrance requirements established by JDCC.
Student must have a “B” average in completed high school courses.
Student must have written approval of the appropriate principal and the superintendent
of education.
Student must be in grade 10, 11, 12, or have an exception granted by JDCC upon the
recommendation of the student’s principal and superintendent and accordance with
Alabama Administrative Code 290-8-9-17 regarding gifted and talented students
(Principals of Alabama high schools may limit dual enrollment to grades 11 and 12 to
comply with policy established by the Alabama Secondary Committee of Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
Occupation/Technical Students: Students who are enrolled in grades 10, 11, or 12 may
be deemed eligible to participate in dual credit/dual enrollment in occupational/technical
courses pending demonstrated ability to benefit as documented by successfully
completing and placement of ASSET, WorkKeys, CPTA, or other assessments
approved by the Department of Postsecondary Education. Students enrolled under the
ability-to-benefit provision must have a “B” (3.0 grade point average ) in high school
courses directly related to the occupational/technical students (if applicable) which the
student intends to pursue at the postsecondary level and an overall 2.5 grade point
average in high school course work. Exceptions may be made on an individual student
basis after assessment and with the mutual consent of both the School Board and the
College.
Student may attempt six semester hours per academic term.

Student who wishes to attend JDCC during the summer semester will follow
Department of Postsecondary Education Policy 801.02: Admissions: Enrollment of
accelerated high school student or this dual enrollment policy.
Courses and Schedules
 All courses listed in the JDCC catalog will be eligible for dual enrollment credit except
physical education courses and those listed below 100. Of course, all JDCC course
prerequisites must be met.
 Classes will be offered at JDCC sites at 7:45 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to accommodate dual
enrollment students and their high school schedules. Dual enrollment students may
attend night classes.
 Schedule will be developed and coordinated by the Dean of Instruction. The Dean will
attempt to meet the needs of students by coordinating with school authorities. Schedules
will be provided to the school principal at least 10 days before the schools advisement
dates if notified by school of the dates at least 45 days in advance.
Cooperative Agreements with School Officials
 Faculty who participate in the dual enrollment program will meet criteria established by
SACS. School administrators may check faculty credentials by visiting Jefferson Davis
Community College’s personnel director.
 Faculty will receive regular compensation.
Procedures
 Students will follow normal JDCC rules and regulations.
 Special registration procedures may be established if requested by the school
administrator.
 Students may meet with JDCC counselor as needed.
 Other JDCC students may attend dual enrollment classes on campus, but they may not
attend courses at high school sites.
 JDCC will evaluate dual enrollment at the end of each academic year.
