SECTION ONE OVERVIEW AND ORGANIZATION OF THE COLLEGE The College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University is the liberal arts college of the University. At the graduate level the College and the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs offer doctoral education in fields of the arts and sciences, including 26 doctoral programs and 35 master’s programs. The college enrolls some 3,200 undergraduate students and, with the Maxwell School, some 1,200 graduate students. It has 370 faculty members. Since it is the central college of the University -- where students from each of the professional schools take a significant portion of their course work -- it serves a total university population of some 11,600 undergraduate students and 4,100 graduate students. The Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs serves as the undergraduate social science division of the College of Arts and Sciences. It has its own dean, budget and offers graduate degrees in the social sciences and in public administration. Faculty members appointed to departments of the Maxwell School are thereby appointed to the Faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences. They participate in all the committee work and college activities that other members of the Faculty of the College do. Undergraduate students with majors in programs of the Maxwell School are liberal arts students who graduate from the College of Arts and Sciences. At Syracuse University 13 academic units are called “schools” or “colleges.” Of these, the Graduate School and University College do not have faculties. The Graduate School oversees and provides administrative support for graduate study in each of the other schools or colleges and University College is responsible for continuing education. Of the remaining 11 schools or colleges all but the Law School admit students as freshmen. They have distinctive curriculums, though students in these schools or colleges do a good portion of their course work in the College of Arts and Sciences. The organizational chart displays the administrative units of the Dean’s Office of the College. Section One
