Using Job Types in TAGA In the new collective agreement for CUPE 3904, Unit 3, qualifications and salary are specified by Job Type. For example, the qualifications for a Teaching Assistant position must include overall GPA of B+ or higher, whereas the academic performance (GPA) qualifications for a Graduate Assistant can be specified by the hiring department. Salary rates, for example, for Graduate Assistants, are listed in the collective agreement by whether the individual has, or the position requires, completion of/enrollment in a Masters program; completion of/enrollment in a PhD program In order to ensure that the appropriate qualifications are listed in a posting, and to ensure the appropriate salary rate is applied, TAGA uses the Job Type selection to determine what rules to apply. When you create a posting it is important to understand that the selection of Job Type will result in the application of rules as explained below. Please note that once you select a Job Type in TAGA and click on “Save” or “Save and Continue” at the bottom of the page, you cannot change it. TAGA will continue to enforce the Teaching Assistant rules, for example, if you change it to Graduate Assistant. You can cancel the document and start again. Also, if you use the copy function, you must select a posting with the same job type, or the wrong rules will be applied. Teaching Assistant This job type should be selected if completion of/enrollment in a Masters or PhD program is not required, and if the job is not limited to either Lab Monitor or Invigilator responsibilities. A graduate student can still apply, but the qualifications should reflect the minimum requirements of the job. Qualifications If the Teaching Assistant job type is selected, TAGA will automatically put in the following qualifications and notes into the job posting: Overall academic performance at B+ (3.3 GPA) and above Must have completed course with B+(3.3 GPA) and above grade level Previous evaluation of performance as an Assistant at the University (if applicable) Note: In exceptional circumstances, teaching assistantships may be offered to Ryerson undergraduate students who are enrolled in the 1st and 2nd year of a program, if such appointments do not include duties that require expertise and knowledge of the academic course content. Note: Applicants who are not registered Ryerson University students will be considered in cases where no qualified Ryerson student is available for this appointment. When creating a job posting, a department will have to determine the following qualifications: Enrolled in 3rd year 4th year, or 3rd or 4th year of a Ryerson undergraduate program Relevant experience required for the job, e.g. experience tutoring math Salary Rates If a 3rd or 4th year student is hired, salary rate applied by TAGA will be Teaching Assistant, Category 1 rate. If a 1st or 2nd year student is hired, salary rate applied by TAGA will be Teaching Assistant, Category 2 rate. (would only occur in situations where hired to carry out non-course related and lab monitor duties) If a Ryerson Graduate student is hired, TAGA will apply the Masters or PhD rate, depending on what program the student is enrolled in. The position should be changed to Graduate Assistant job type on the hire form. If a transitional student is hired, TAGA will apply the Masters rate. In all other cases, TAGA will apply the Teaching Assistant, Category 2 rate. Graduate Assistant This job type should be selected when completion of/enrollment in a Masters or PhD program is required, and if the job is not limited to Lab Monitor or Invigilator responsibilities. Again, the level selected should reflect the minimum qualifications, but does not prevent someone with higher qualifications from applying. Qualifications If the Job Type of Graduate Assistant is selected, TAGA will automatically put the following qualifications and notes in the job posting: Previous evaluation of performance as an Assistant at the University (if applicable) Greater preference will be accorded first to Doctoral candidates, then Master's candidates Note: Applicants who are not registered Ryerson University students will be considered in cases where no qualified Ryerson student is available for this appointment. When creating a job posting, a department will have to determine the following qualifications: Enrolled in 1st year Masters, 2nd year Masters or PhD program, or completed Masters or PhD program. Academic Performance/GPA Relevant Experience Salary Rates If a Ryerson student is hired, the relevant Masters or PhD rate will apply depending on the program the student is enrolled in, e.g. if the student is enrolled in a PhD program, the PhD rate will apply. For all other situations, e.g. non-student, non-Ryerson student, the rate that will be applied will be based on the qualifications required in the posting. For example, if the job required enrollment in 2nd year of a Masters program and a non-Ryerson PhD student was hired, the Masters rate will apply. Lab Monitor This Job Type should be selected if the position is only performing Lab Monitor responsibilities. Qualifications Departments can indicate, in sentence form, any qualifications required. There are no qualifications that will be automatically applied. Salary Rate The salary rate for Lab Monitors will always be the Teaching Assistant, Category 2 rate. Invigilator This Job Type should be selected if the position is only performing Invigilator responsibilities. Qualifications Departments can indicate, in sentence form, any qualifications required. There are no qualifications that will be automatically applied. Salary Rate The salary rate for Invigilators will always be the Teaching Assistant, Category 2 rate.
