POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE:
Assistant Director, Career Education & Coaching (Pre-Health)
REPORTS TO:
Director, The Piper Center for Vocation and Career
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Assistant Director will provide career coaching and vocational guidance to students
primarily interested in health related careers. The successful candidate will be charged with
developing, supporting, and maintaining high quality pre-health programs in the Piper Center.
The Assistant Director is also responsible for administering two cohort internship programs at
Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) and Mayo Clinic.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
1. Provide one-on-one coaching to students interested in health-related or medical careers.
Implement workshops, information sessions, employer site visits, rotational shadowing
experiences, and industry panels to introduce students to a wide range of health/medical
careers.
2. Serve as the Piper Center’s liaison to the Health Professions Committee (HPC). Meet
regularly with the HPC Chair and provide guidance to the Committee during the selection
process.
3. Manage cohort internships at HCMC and Mayo Clinic designed to give students access to
clinical, administrative, and public health opportunities. Work with major donors and
alumni to cultivate experiential opportunities in the health/medical arena. Promote
opportunities to students, and coordinate the selection process in collaboration with
faculty.
4. Plan and facilitate Ole Med, student-alumni networking event for students considering
careers in medicine. Collaborate with alumni facilitator to identify steering committee
members and pop-up speakers. Cultivate student interest and provide post-event
programming designed to allow students to capitalize on what they learned.
5. Manage Pre-Health Peer Advisors. Train, mentor and guide Advisors in developing
content for workshops, pre-health webpages, and event management. Collaborate with
Assistants to source and host career panels and graduate school visits/prep sessions.
6. Build and maintain relationships with graduate/professional schools in the health
professions. Guide students through the application process and help prepare them for
interviews. Track and report annually on student matriculation into graduate/professional
school in the health professions.

7. Monitor changes and updates to health professions and related graduate school programs.
Research and promote new pre-health opportunities. Maintain membership with the
National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions and participate in regional
associations, national conferences, and professional development.
8. Develop and maintain the pre-health website. Update and improve Discernment
Resources, the Undergraduate Timeline, list of Professions, and Calendar of Events.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Manage pre-health student workers.

EDUCATION:
Essential:
Master’s degree (M.A., M.Ed., other)
EXPERIENCE:
Essential:
3-5 years healthcare, higher education, or career
development experience coaching clients or
customers
Desirable:
Experience working with undergraduate students;
familiarity with career development/counseling
theories and methods; specialized knowledge of the
health/medical fields
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

Knowledge of health/medical career fields and opportunities for experiential learning.
Knowledge of career development/counseling theories and methods.
Exceptional writing and public presentation skills required.
Team player with solid interpersonal skills.
Knowledge of the academic environment and experiential learning best practices.
Ability to work with faculty, employers, alumni, and health professionals.
Event planning and production skills.
