Departments will have to have Course Directors check the criteria used for
reporting of information requested for awards in the future.
It was suggested that the group review the Academic Progress Policy (point
3) changes as is expected to be the first of many as a result of the working
party.
The amendments to Faculty Credit policy will not directly affect Departments
as are operational. Further discussion is expected at the next AACT
meeting regarding this policy.
6.
Course Amendments
6.1 New course proposals recommended by Undergraduate Studies
Committee for approval at Faculty Board
Course structure for Bachelor of Health Science/Bachelor of Business listed
on page 18 of proposal needs to include statement that students must do 16
units (96 points) from the Faculty of Business and Economics.
Concern was also raised about the unit MTH1010 Functions and their
applications being listed as unit in the Clinical and Public Health Sciences
major as this unit is equivalent to year 12 maths which is an entry
requirement.
Fiona Bertoli
6.2 Course amendments recommended for Undergraduate Students
Committee for approval at Faculty Board
There were some concerns that students will not be able to complete a 2nd
major with the Bachelor of Business course structure in the amendments for
the Peninsula campus as a second major would be completed at Caulfield
campus. Course maps for all majors to be prepared.
7. Unit Amendments
Amendments listed in agenda noted
.
8. Other Business
8.1 Bachelor of Business at Peninsula Campus
The group were given the background information for the introduction of the
Bachelor of Business at the Peninsula campus.
Two majors will be offered at the campus, Business Strategy (cross
discipline major) and Tourism, in the future a sports management type
major may be introduced. The Tourism major will be available to Caulfield
students.
It is hoped that 2011 will see 30 students enrolling into the degree at
Peninsula, which will be taught with problem based learning pedagogy.
Units are currently being developed, and training programs and workshops
will be held for staff teaching these units.
The course proposal is currently awaiting approval at Faculty Board, so

staffing within departments has not yet been set.
Concern has been raised by Peninsula staff as they don’t feel they know
enough about the degree to sell it to prospective students. Caulfield staff will
be give some information in the short term to present to students at the Age
Student Expo but further information will be provided once approved at
Faculty Board.
The teaching method has generated some interest in the Faculty and it is
hoped there is some cross over and benefits from this method throughout
the Faculty.
8.2 OXFAM scholarships
OXFAM have asked Monash University to link into their International Youth
Program. Every three years this program holds a conference which hosts
300 students from around the world. This link has resulted in the
opportunity for three Monash students to participate in a work placement
arrangement working in Sydney and at the conference in India during
semester two 2010.
Group members are asked to pass this information onto staff within their
departments and promote this program to students.
Information has been distributed to students via a number of communication
channels and there has already been a lot of interest.
In general, internships have been extended from IBM. Prato has expressed
interest in having Australian students undertake internship type semesters
and other opportunities are being investigated.
8.3 IBM scholarships update
The first mid semester review for the 1st intake of IBM scholarship students
has been undertaken and all has worked well. IBM having been using some
of the students as ambassadors for the company and are using the program
as a model image of best practice.
The PAL’s (Peers, Ambassadors and Leaders) program is also having a
good impact on students.
It was suggested that the PAL and IBM students should be involved with
Department staff at Open Day to promote these programs and highlight
extra circulate activities as not all staff aware of these programs or are not
comfortable selling them.
8.4 International discussions
The Chair advised the group of his recent travels to Italy, France and
Germany:
 Rouen Business School – attended student presentations on their
international experience as part of their course.
 WHU Otto Besheim – held discussions about possible strategic
partnership. Interest shown in student and staff exchanges


Bocconi and University of Torino – 2+2 degree program discussed
The Group were advised that student interest for exchange programs with
the USA is high. It was noted that work has been done in the USA but not
as developed as talks with European institutions.
Department representatives are encouraged to urge staff to suggest
institutions they work with for strategic discussions.
