STUDENT PLACEMENT
CURRENT WORKPLACE FOR PLACEMENT APPLICATION
Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy
Students may be currently employed or volunteering in occupations where they deliver or provide
appropriate services to clients that meet the Placement Standards of their program. Students who believe
their current workplace meets the required placement standards and learning outcomes, and who would
like to undertake their placement at their current workplace are required to first discuss this option with
your Student Placement Coordinator prior to submitting a Current Workplace Application to the Student
Placement Department.
Your application will need to include details on how you will achieve your 80 hours of face to face
counselling.
Counselling includes:

Face to face counselling or psychotherapy sessions with a client over 17 years of age, and seeing
the client for at least 3 sessions (this allows you to develop a counselling relationship)

Facilitating or co-facilitating a formal group therapy program with adults (usually following a
manual or outline of weekly session content, minimum of 5 sessions, with a minimum of 4
clients attending the sessions)

AFTER you have completed min 40 hours of counselling with adults as described above, you may
THEN include: telephone/Skype counselling; counselling work with young people under 18 years
of age; mindfulness sessions; motivational interviews and other counselling sessions.
Keep in mind that the PACFA definition of counselling or counselling related work requires an explicitly
contracted counselling relationship with a focus for change.

Upon submission, the application will be assessed by the Student Placement Department who will notify
the student once their application has been assessed. If a placement is approved, the student will
proceed as though they were commencing a placement within any other organisation.

Health Services Officer/Provisional Psychologist
Working in a full time role, 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday, to support clients within Max Solutions Health. Working
with a caseload of up to 20 clients, up to 6 sessions each, will enable the Health Services officer to reach the
required number of hours of counselling – 40 hours of face to face counselling per term for 2 terms (80 hours).
Through the provision of services to clients aged between 16-64, presenting with and experiencing a range of
issues, such as anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, stress, AOD use etc., the Health Services Officer at Max
Solutions-Health, focuses on investigating, describing, explaining, predicting and modifying human behavior,
cognition and emotion where appropriate, as well as supporting clients with their current issues and working
toward change using evidenced based interventions such as;
CBT, CT, BT, MBCT, ACT, DBT, Solution focused therapy, Person Centered Therapy, Mindfulness, Psychoanalytic
Psychotherapy, Group Therapy and other.
Counselling of a caseload of up to 20 clients, activities within the HSO Role include:
Assessment of presenting problem
Gathering relevant background history
Administering psychometric tests
Developing case formulations
Making diagnoses where appropriate
Review of relevant evidence-based theories
Development of intervention plans
Face to face delivery and assessment of intervention/counselling
Ongoing intervention planning and delivery through a therapeutic relationship up to 6 sessions with each client
Facilitating Group Therapy Sessions
Liaising with case workers, doctors, and other.

Assessment consists of structured clinical interview, semi-structured clinical interview and unstructured clinical
interview, as indicated by client presentation. Assessment is undertaken on an individual basis. Systematic
behavioural observation includes naturalistic observation, clinical observation and observation of individuals
and groups.
Intensive training and workshop program directed towards developing the core competencies.
Supervision from principal and secondary supervisor as well as onsite placement Supervision from Senior
Psychologists.
