STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES SUPERVISOR
DEFINITION
Under the direction of the assigned dean, plans, organizes and directs the operations of assessment, job
placement, re-entry and career center services. Develops and implements an assessment program,
including diagnostic, placement and career testing of prospective, new, returning and continuing students.
Develops and implements employment referral services. Develops employment opportunities for students
and graduates. Develops and implements programs to serve re-entry students. Performs related duties as
assigned.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Plans, organizes and directs the operations of assessment, job placement, re-entry and career center
services. Establishes and directs testing services for prospective, new, returning and continuing students.
Works with advisory groups and recommends adoption of appropriate assessment instruments. Directs
and monitors the use of computerized assessment systems. Provides in-service training on test
administration. Interviews, advises and refers job applicants for part-time and graduate employment.
Assists students in using resources to identify career interests. Develops and maintains liaisons with area
employers to provide work opportunities for current and former students, and with local high schools to
provide assessment services for prospective students. Establishes and maintains record keeping systems
for assessment, job placement, re-entry and career center activities. Selects, trains, supervises and
evaluates performance of classified staff and student assistants assigned to assessment, job placement, reentry and career center. Develops and implements departmental procedures, both manual and automated.
Provides for training and appropriate implementation of new and revised practices. Develops, designs
and implements procedures, forms and materials required for efficient assessment, job placement, re-entry
and career center operations. Interprets and applies complex procedures in diverse situations using
independent judgment. Ensures accountability and adherence to established policies and procedures.
Coordinates assessment, job placement, re-entry and career center services with the work experience
coordinator, counselors, financial aid staff, occupational education dean and other student services and
instructional staff. Works closely with the CalWORKS Supervisor to ensure appropriate services are
provided TANF and CalWORKS eligible students. Assists in developing and providing assessment and
job placement opportunities for TANF and CalWORKS students. Develops and maintains a placement
program for all students seeking employment, including current students, graduates, certificate earners,
and those who leave college for other reasons. Performs follow-up with employers to determine student
effectiveness on the job. Organizes employer visits to the campus for recruitment and for providing
career information. Serves on advisory committees concerned with assessment, placement and career
opportunities for students and CalWORKS, as appointed by the Vice President of Student Services.
Develops and maintains a program for job assistance for disabled and disadvantaged students. Provides
information on vocational opportunities and career assistance to students, both individually and in group
settings. Provides vocational testing that, with appropriate interpretation from counselors, will help to
discern student job interests. Develops and maintains an inventory of educational and vocational
resources, including assessment instruments. Develops and implements programs and services to support
re-entry students. Compiles and generates reports related to assessment, job placement, re-entry and the
career center. Maintains and monitors budget records and expenditures for assessment, job placement, reentry and the career center and ensures that expenditures are within budget allocations and guidelines.
Provides information to students and staff on current labor market trends and job opportunities.

improvement. Provides statistical information on assessment, placement and labor market trends to the
Instruction Office for use in program review. Participates in student services program review. Responds
to requests for information from students, staff and the public on assessment, job placement, re-entry and
career center activities. Performs related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
EXPERIENCE
Three years of increasingly responsible experience in student services, public services or human
resources, including one year in a lead or supervisory capacity. Experience in assessment, job placement,
re-entry or career services at a community college preferred.
EDUCATION
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; or an associate degree from an accredited
college or university plus two additional qualifying years of experience.
KNOWLEDGE OF
Interviewing techniques; computer systems and applications related to assessment, job placement, reentry and career information; assessment and job placement practices; assessment instruments, testing and
scoring procedures; statistical or mathematical applications used in testing research; special needs of reentry students; records management and retention procedures; modern office practices, procedures and
equipment; applicable sections of the State Education Code, State Code of Regulations, and other
applicable laws and regulations; interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy; principles and
practices of effective supervision and training; budget preparation and control; college and district
policies and procedures.
ABILITY TO (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS)
Perform the basic functions of the position; plan, organize, control and direct assessment, job placement,
re-entry and career center functions; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; maintain records
and prepare reports; operate a computer terminal to enter data, maintain records and generate reports; use
computer software applications such as Word, Excel, Paradox, etc., to produce reports and information;
set priorities and schedule work assignments; organize and participate in activities designed for student
success; establish effective liaisons with area employers and high schools; train, supervise and evaluate
assigned personnel; maintain current knowledge of program policies, regulations, requirements and
restrictions; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; meet schedules and time
lines; work cooperatively and effectively with the public, students, faculty and staff; organize and conduct
individual and group assessment and training activities; work independently with minimal direction; work
as a member of a team; participate in program review activities; sustain regular work attendance; exercise
initiative and good judgment.
