Classroom Guidance for Week of November 12th – 16th K-4 Lesson: Personal Safety: Part 1 (and Part 2 for 4th grade) (Special Guest Speaker Mary McDonough) o Interactive, age-appropriate lessons geared toward helping students identify abuse and empowering them to report and resist it. Materials: “Our Pledge” worksheet, Citizenship bookmarks o Write the Pledge Of Allegiance on the white board. o Open discussion: “We say the pledge every day, but do you know what it means to pledge allegiance?” Elicit responses. o Write the definitions to the words below on the board: Pledge: a serious promise Allegiance: loyalty or dedication to a belief or country o Say: “Citizenship is our character trait for this month and it has everything to do with the pledge. It is when you make a promise to be loyal and dedicate your time and energy to your community and nation. School is an example of the community you are in now. Now, I want you to imagine what the pledge would look like if it was written by someone today. How would you write it?” o Split the class into groups of 4 or 5. Handout “Our Pledge” Worksheet. Have them work on this worksheet in groups for approximately 10 minutes. o When finished, invite each group to give their pledge of allegiance. o Process: “How did it feel to write the group pledge?” “How can you be a good citizen to the people around you?” “When you make a promise, do you keep it?” “What will you do to be a good citizen in your class?”
