5th Grade Lesson: The Pledge Of Allegiance: What does it mean to me?
 Materials: “Our Pledge” worksheet, Citizenship bookmarks
o Write the Pledge Of Allegiance on the white board.
o Open discussion: “We say the pledge every day, but do you know
what it means to pledge allegiance?” Elicit responses.
o Write the definitions to the words below on the board:
 Pledge: a serious promise
 Allegiance: loyalty or dedication to a belief or country
o Say: “Citizenship is our character trait for this month and it has
everything to do with the pledge. It is when you make a promise to
be loyal and dedicate your time and energy to your community and
nation. School is an example of the community you are in now.
Now, I want you to imagine what the pledge would look like if it was
written by someone today. How would you write it?”
o Split the class into groups of 4 or 5. Handout “Our Pledge”
Worksheet. Have them work on this worksheet in groups for
approximately 10 minutes.
o When finished, invite each group to give their pledge of allegiance.
o Process:
 “How did it feel to write the group pledge?”
 “How can you be a good citizen to the people around you?”
 “When you make a promise, do you keep it?”
 “What will you do to be a good citizen in your class?”
