Aims and scope
Scoliosis and Spinal Disorders is an open access, multidisciplinary journal that encompasses all
aspects of research on prevention, diagnosis, treatment, outcomes and cost-analyses of
conservative and surgical management of all spinal deformities and disorders. Both clinical and
basic science reports form the cornerstone of the journal in its endeavour to provide original,
primary studies as well as narrative/systematic reviews and meta-analyses to the academic
community and beyond. Scoliosis and Spinal Disorders aims to provide an integrated and
balanced view of cutting-edge spine research to further enhance effective collaboration among
clinical spine specialists and scientists, and to ultimately improve patient outcomes based on an
evidence-based spine care approach.

Announcing Scoliosis and Spinal Disorders
From Volume 11 (2016), the journal will be publishing as Scoliosis and Spinal Disorders
(previously Scoliosis). The journal scope has broadened to include all types of spinal deformities
and disorders that entail conservative and surgical management within clinical or basic science
research.
In addition, we welcome our new co-Editor-in-Chief, Dr Dino Samartzis (University of Hong
Kong).

About the Editors
Dr Theodoros B Grivas, MD, PhD is currently Director of the Traumatology and
Orthopaedic Department at Tzaneio General Hospital in Piraeus.
He completed his medical doctorate and postgraduate degrees at Aristotle University of
Thessaloniki, Greece and completed his training in general surgery, paediatrics and adult
orthopaedics and traumatology in Greece. Dr Grivas has served appointments in the UK at the
University Hospital, Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham as well at the Harlow Wood
Orthopaedic Hospital in Mansfield, and as an attending orthopaedic surgeon at the Evangelismos
and Thriasio General Hospital in Athens, Greece. Dr Grivas was also a traveling fellow of the
American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) and the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS). He has
served as the President of the International Research Society for Spinal Deformities (IRSSD) and
the Society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment (SOSORT), and is currently
the President-Elect of the Hellenic Spine Society. He is a member of the Hellenic Association of
Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, AOA, SRS and of numerous other scientific societies.
He has been very active in several clinical and basic science research, most notably he has
implemented the large-scale Scoliosis School Screening Program in Greece.
Dr Dino Samartzis, DSc, is a faculty member at the Department of Orthopaedics and
Traumatology at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and Director of Clinical Spine Research,
Deputy Director of the Laboratory and Clinical Research Institute of Pain, and Warden (Head) of
Hornell Hall at HKU.
He has pursued undergraduate/graduate studies at Northwestern University, Harvard University,
University of Oxford, Cambridge University, and Erasmus University. He completed postdoctoral fellowships at the United States National Institutes of Health (NIH), the United States
National Academy of Sciences, the Radiation Effects Research Foundation in Japan, and HKU.
He has over 15 years of experience in clinical and translational spine research, has published
over 280 journal articles and book chapters, and has been the Editor-in-Chief of several
textbooks and journal theme issues. He has received over 45 international awards for his research
and has been the lead investigator in numerous large-scale, multicenter, international studies. He
is a member of numerous societies, and Director/Chair and founder of various international
consortiums.
