RHS Clubs & Organizations
2011-2012
Students of Reno High School have a long established tradition of involvement in school
organizations and with athletic teams. Each student is encouraged to participate in at least one
extracurricular activity that reflects his/her interest.
Academic Olympics
Mr. Ochs/ Ms. Evans/ Mr. Meinert
AO is a club that encourages the brightest students at RHS to challenge themselves and compete
against their peers in all academic areas in a friendly educational setting. Competitions include
the semi-annual Knowledge Master, the annual Nevada Regional Science Bowl held in Las
Vegas, and the County Academic Olympics competition. Reno High School has a long history of
success in each of these competitions, most recently winning first place in the county AO
competition and first place in the Nevada Regional Science Bowl for 2007. Practices take place
Mondays at lunch in room R15. All students are welcome.
Anime Club
Mr. Potter
The purpose of this club shall be to increase personal and public understanding of Japanese
culture, specifically their main art forms and media (anime and manga) and may sometimes
include food, customs, language and clothing. Anime will meet on Fridays afterschool in room
N11.
Art Club
Ms. Gandolfo
Art Club is designed for students with an interest in the visual arts. Activities include visiting
galleries and museums, making art, going to see films, talking with local professional artists, and
organizing the Black Ivory Café (Reno High’s amazing talent show). Art Club meets every
Thursday at lunch in IA3. Hope to see you there!
Asian Pacific Islanders
Mrs. Rillon/ SGM Rillon
The Asian-Pacific Islanders Club studies different ethnic groups from around the world with a
specific emphasis on the Pacific Rim. Students learn about the geography, cultures and traditions
of various ethnic groups throughout the year. Students need not be of a certain ethnic group as all
are welcome to join this club. The Asian-Pacific Islanders Club sponsors a special fundraiser for
scholarships as well as co-sponsoring Reno High's Mini-Night of Nations along with the Spanish
Club and Amnesty International. The Asian-Pacific Islanders Club meets in M-3 during lunch on
Tuesdays.
Christian Club
Mrs. Rillon/ SGM Rillon
Christian Club meets during lunch on Wednesday in room M3. Meetings are open to everyone
and generally consist of praise, scripture, prayer, testimonials, and fellowship.
Cinema Lovers Club
The Cinema Lovers Club will gather and watch the best contemporary, classic, foreign and
domestic films. After the films, students will discuss the movie, its underlying message, and
how the message is portrayed through effects, setting, script and angles. This club meets TBA.
Dance Club
Mrs. Spalka
Dance Club meets at lunch in HI1. Students will create a piece of choreography to perform; learn
how to choose music with dynamics and variety that lends itself to dance; and learn how to chart
and count out music, stage choreography and costume the piece. A variety of dance styles will
be implemented; Hip hop, Jazz, Ballet, Latin, Lyrical, etc. Students will also discuss how to keep
their bodies healthy and implement warm ups that help prevent injury.
Drama

If you are mesmerized by the glitz and glamour of the theatrical world, please come and join us
every Tuesday @ lunch. Students will be exposed to all facets of theater and have a hands on
learning experience discovering the joys of how to produce a show. Students will also learn the
technical and performing aspects of theater while preparing for several shows throughout the
year. Drama club students are expected to participate in each show in one way or another.
Dependability and a flexible schedule are extremely important.
Environmental Club

The purpose of Environmental Club is to increase personal and public understanding of
environmental issues, promote the study of the environment and to help students and staff of
Reno HS participate in environmental activism. This club meets on Tuesdays at lunch in E3.
FBLA
Mr. MacKay/ Mr. Macaluso
Future Business Leaders of America is a nonprofit education association with a quarter million
students preparing for careers in business and business-related fields. FBLA's National Awards
Program recognizes and rewards excellence in a broad range of business and career-related areas.
Through state-based competition at the spring State Leadership Conferences, students compete in
events testing their business knowledge and skills. Top state winners then are eligible to compete
for honors at the National Leadership Conference each summer.
Fiber Guild

Teaching and encouraging arts, crafts hand-made items. This club will meet at lunch every
Friday in Mrs. Gandolfo’s classroom IA4.
Fishing Club
Mr. Shoda
The Fishing Club is going to discuss how to fish different ways, such as techniques, methods,
river, lake and stream fishing. The club will be affiliated with the Truckee River Fly Fishers
Association. The club will work on community projects like river clean up days. Meetings will
be at lunch on Thursdays in room N8A.
French Club
Ms. Deschenes
French Club strives to expand personal experience with French culture and to give students a
wider understanding of the French Language, customs, country, and people. This year the
French club is looking forward to its upcoming activities such as dinning at the French
Restaurant "Le Beaujolais", baking a log cake for the holiday season, movies during lunch, fundraising to offset the cost of our activities and to do kind acts for our community. The club meets
every other week during lunch on a day to be announced in room R22 with its advisor, Ms.
Deschenes.
Gamers’ Club
Mr. Goodfellow
Feel like nobody likes what you like? Gamers’ Club is a friendly environment to talk about
games, movies, and shows. You will get the opportunity to discuss video game strategies, plan
tournaments, win prizes, and play state of the art video games with students all over campus.
Meetings are held weekly in N-9. Come by and check it out.
Gay-Straight Alliance

The GSA (Gay-Straight-Alliance-) is an open environment for kids from all walks of life.
Through education, the GSA plans to unite gay and straight students of Reno High School and
promote tolerance.
International Affairs Club
Mr. McCart
The goals of the International Affairs Club are to promote International understanding, cultural
awareness, and break down cultural barriers. IAC meetings are on Fridays at lunch in R-14.
Interact Club
Mr. Potter
Interact is a youth’s service club dedicated to community and international service. Each year,
Interact clubs complete at least two community service projects, one of which furthers
international understanding and goodwill. Through these efforts, Interactors develop a network
of friendships with local and overseas clubs and learn the importance of





Key Club
Ms. Lucas
Key Club is an international student-let organization which provides its members with
opportunities to provide service, build character, and develop leadership. Reno High's Key Club
works in partnership with the Kiwanis of Reno. We meet every Thursday at lunch in GB5.
Literary Magazine (Mirror)
Mrs. Larson
The Mirror is a collection of student writing and art work. Throughout the school year, our club
encourages the student body to submit writing, art, and photography for contests and for possible
entry in the magazine. The club meets to discuss what items will be selected for publication, to
determine layout and design, and also to create fundraising activities. Meeting times & dates will
be determined by the editors soon, so listen to the announcements & join us if you're interested!
Meditation Club

This club spends time meditating at lunch in room R-6 in order to relieve stress both mentally
and physically.
Mock Trial
Mrs. Moberg
The Mock Trial team is for students who are interested in speech and debate and the judicial
system. Students involved with this team have a chance to work with real attorneys and judges.
Tryouts are held in early October and competition is held in February. This team won State last
year and had a chance to travel to Nationals.
National Honor Society

Students are inducted into Honor Society in April of each year. In order to be eligible for
National Honor Society, a student must be a Junior or Senior with a 3.7 cumulative GPA in good
standing. Students who are inducted into National Honor Society are expected to complete
community service hours during the school year.
Novel Book Club

The purpose of this club is to read and discuss literature through a “book club” format. This club
meets Friday at lunch in O2.
P.A.T.H
Ms. Whitten
Powerful Achievers Truimph with Honors is a club that promotes self-advocacy, independent
living, scholarship and grant research, transitions after high school and self-defense strategies.
The purpose is to help teenagers with acquiring information needed to survive in the world
outside of high school. The club meets every Thursday at lunch in Room N7B.
Philosophy Club

Do you question the deeper, more abstract purposes in your life? Do you ponder the morality in
topical issues such as abortion, capital punishment and torture? Do you want to know more
about romanticism, existentialism, utilitarian, objectivism, realism, structuralism or postmodernism? Philosophy Club is a place where students accumulate and discuss intellectual and
poignant topics in an accepting and enlightening manner. Meeting in GB-4, Wednesdays after
school and our doors are always open (figuratively).
Ski & Snowboard Club

Ski and Snowboard Club is a great way to ski/snowboard at most of Tahoe's resorts at discounted
rates. A great time had by all skiers and snowboarders of all levels. Look for announcements and
posters when the snow starts falling! Think SNOW!
Spanish Club

This club is for students who like to speak Spanish, would like to practice Spanish, and have an
interest in Hispanic culture. All students are welcome, no matter if you are an experienced,
native speaker of Spanish or a beginner. We will focus on various topics each week, like
geography, food, culture, trips we've taken or would like to take, and current events. Meetings
will be student-organized and run. Some information will be given in English, but every meeting
will provide the opportunity to speak Spanish. Meetings will take place at lunch on a day to be
announced in Room R20. President and Vice-president have been elected, though a
secretary/treasurer will be elected at the second meeting. The Spanish Club 1) sponsors RHS
Mini-Night of Nations 2)organizes a community project 3) hosts monthly movie nights in
Spanish at the county library 4) facilitates the UNR Knowledge Bowl team for RHS.
Speech & Debate

If you are interested in public speaking, and fun, stop by one of our after school practices in
Room GB4 to see how amazing this award winning team is. We are looking for dedicated and
determined members to join us at our monthly tournaments.
Student Council
Student Council is designed to help students become leaders in the Reno High School
Community. Members of Student Council plan and carry out school events for each of their
individual classes throughout the year.

Young Democrats Club

The Young Democrats is an organization dedicated to fostering active, involved students who
think deeply and critically about the political issues of the day, as well as contributing to the
communities in which they live. As such, the club has activities ranging from guest speakers,
voter registration drives, issue debates, and charitable work done to benefit the community at
large.
