INVESTIGATIVE ACTIVITIES ∙ UNIT 7
1.
As a class, divide up the following activities among small groups (although everyone would benefit
from actually doing each of these activities).
A. Take a trip to your local women’s clinic and pick up flyers and brochures about pregnancy, birth
control, breast conditions/diseases, menstruation and menopause, sexually transmitted diseases,
and other information about women’s bodies.
B. Do they have any videos you could watch? If not, go to the local library and check out a video or
two.
C. Think of other places where you could find this sort of information and these types of resources.
Does your family doctor or gynecologist (if you are female) have these resources? Go to the
office and gather more information.
As a class, review all the information gathered. View the videos. Invite a female health educator
(maybe a medical assistant or nurse who works in gynecology or obstetrics or a physician who
specializes in women’s health) into your class to give a presentation about female health care.
2.

The older adult person often has difficulty maneuvering, especially if sight has decreased.
Techniques that can help the person get around are called sighted guide techniques. It is important
for medical assistants to understand the limitations that older adults may face and have some
insight into how to help. Blindfold a classmate and spend 15 minutes walking around, helping the
classmate maneuver around the hallways and classroom using the guide techniques described. Then
switch roles so you are blindfolded and your classmate must assist you in maneuvering.
A. List several techniques used to assist the blindfolded person in walking.
