WELCOME TO LYNNDALE ELEMENTARY FOR THE 2015-2016 SCHOOL YEAR! There are a lot of changes at Lynndale this fall! Most of you have found your way to our interim building, Old Woodway Elementary. We are working hard to make this our home while our brand new, state-of-the-art building is being constructed on our Lynnwood property (well, they haven’t actually started yet). We really appreciate your patience as we adjust to all students riding buses, a new campus to learn, eating lunch in the cafeteria, and the new time schedule. Each day gets a little easier. Pull out your calendar, pour yourself a cup of coffee or tea, and have a seat in your favorite chair because this issue is information-packed and may take a few minutes to read. PLEASE NOTE OUR NEW OFFICE HOURS… 8:10-3:40 STAFF CHANGES…. We have several new staff members, and some teachers from last year who have changed grades. In the next couple editions of The Lion’s Roar, I will be introducing you to these new Lion Leaders. To begin with, these teachers have changed grade levels: Ms. Sateren – moved from Grade 1 to Kindergarten Mrs. Espegard – moved from Kindergarten to Grade 1 Miss Phillips – changed from Grades 2/3 to Grade 2 only Ms. Ladoski – moved from Grade 3 to Grade 5 Mrs. Slettebak – moved from Grade 4 to Grade 3 Mr. Brown – moved from Kindergarten to Grade 6 Below are three new staff members: Coming to us from Mukilteo School District is our new 4th grade teacher, Mr. Matt Stevenson. He taught in our neighboring district for ten years and is glad to now be on the same academic schedule as his wife who is a teacher at Lynnwood High School. Welcome, Mr. Stevenson! We are very excited to have Mrs. Sarah Fell as a new teacher on our staff. She will be working with our Kindergarten team, and comes to us from Northshore Christian Academy where she taught Kindergarten for five years. Welcome, Mrs. Fell! Ms. Becca Deshaies was a sub for Edmonds School District, and she is very excited to now have a permanent position at Lynndale as a Paraeducator in Mrs. Crabtree’s class. Becca graduated from Seattle University with degrees in Psychology and History. Welcome, Ms. Deshaies! WELCOME BACK POTLUCK… Many of our Lynndale Lion families came to our ‘new’ campus to celebrate the beginning of the school year and reconnect with other families. What a fun time! Children were able to safely play on the huge playground, which provided the children with something to do while their parents visited. Thank you so much, families, for bringing so many great ‘potluck’ items, and to the PTA for providing all those delicious croissant sandwiches! CURRICULUM NIGHT…THIS THURSDAY! Please plan to attend Curriculum Night on Thursday, starting at 5:30 with the Book Fair (details below). There will be a welcome presentation at 6:00 in the gym, and then opportunities for you to visit the classrooms, hear about Music and PE programs, meet your student’s teacher, and (NEW) sign up for your October conference. This is a very important event! Spanish Interpreter will be available. Please see attached informational flyer. MOVE 60!... We have MOVE 60 starting on Oct. 5! I have mine, and I love it! FOUNDATION 5K WALK/RUN REGISTRATON FORMS BEING COLLECTED… Team Lynndale Lions has now been formed. Please, please help us keep the trophy for the third year in a row (received trophy, money, and lunch party for most participants). Attached is a registration form. You won’t want to miss this! Get your families’ registration forms in today! Please help spread the word! VISION AND HEARING SCREENING… We will be conducting Vision and Hearing Screenings Tuesday, September 22. If your child wears glasses, PLEASE remember to send them to school that day. Please see the attached document for details. AN URGENT REQUEST… We need volunteers to help with the Vision and Hearing screening on Tuesday, September 22, from 8:25 to 3:10. No experience necessary! Volunteers will be asked to go to the classrooms to bring the kids to the testing areas, and may also be asked to help keep the lines orderly or to help lead kids from one area to another. In the past, we’ve had two “shifts” of volunteers, the first from 8:25-11:40 (includes a little debrief time), and the second shift from 11:40 to 3:10. If you can help for any (or both!) of those times, please contact Charlotte Richardson, our SLP (Speech Therapist), at RichardsonC@edmonds.wednet.edu or 425-431-1050. She will contact you with details. ACTIVE LIVING FAIR - Saturday, September 26 Pancake Breakfast and Active Living Fair, 8:30 am to Noon! THIS YEAR’S LOCATION - LYNNWOOD ELEMENTARY (a joint event with LE families). This is a fun community event aimed at promoting healthy, active living. Our goal is to demonstrate all the fun things there are to do right here in our own community. This is one of the most fun events of the year, and the whole family - and neighborhood - is invited! More details will be coming home before then, but for now, please save the date and plan to be there with all your family and friends! PICTURE DAY… Wednesday, September 30 is our picture day! Every student will have a picture taken for school records and for the yearbook. Families wishing to order packets must turn in the envelope on or before picture day with exact payment. If you would like to order pictures, but need help paying for them, please contact school counselor Shauna Guinn at 425-431-1160 to request a scholarship. There is a limited supply. All requests are confidential. Watch for your picture packets to come home one week before picture day. WATCH DOGS DADS… If you are a dad, grandpa, uncle, or other adult male of a Lynndale student, plan to attend a Watch DOGS Dads event on October 1. They will be meeting from 6-7 in the gym (have you seen how huge the gym is?!?) for pizza, beverages, and then hoop shooting for those who want to have a fun-packed evening. Watch DOGS Dads is a national organization, and Lynndale’s Leader is Jeremy Owen. Email me if you want to be connected with Jeremy. YEARBOOK CORRECTION… If you received a yearbook last year, and would like a correction label for Mrs. Grefsrud’s page (it says grade 1, and she is grade 2), email me and I will send you the correction label. All of this year’s third graders received the corrected label with their class placement letter. PTA FAMILIES HELP OUT… Thank you so much, PTA families, who helped spruce up our campus before school started. They weeded the front of the campus, and that made a huge difference on the appearance of the grounds. Thanks to: Andrea Matson, Rachel Broderhausen, Heidi Owen, Sophia Owen, Kennedy Pack, Ashley Matson, Audrey Broderhausen, and Lance Broderhausen. Also, we are so grateful to the following PTA family members for putting together all the first day packets. That was a HUGE job! Thanks to: Jennifier Buckingham, Whitney Glaser, Desiree Trubshaw, Makayla Trubshaw, Madisyn Trubshaw, Tracy Skogman, Beth Zollars, Janet Determan, Monica Wheaton, and Heidi Owen. YOU, TOO, CAN BE INVOLVED… PTA - It’s YOUR school and there are many ways in which to be involved. I am so excited to see all the great events our PTA has planned to create community, and support our school. Being a member of our PTA, or volunteering at the events, is how you will get to know other parents of our wonderful Lynndale community! It is wonderful to see all the volunteer forms that have already been returned to the office…keep them coming in! Please see the attached award-winning PTA Newsletter, and check out lynndale.ourschoolpages.com! KEEP CONNECTED… I’m looking forward to getting our email distribution lists up-to-date, and need your help. If you change email addresses, or would like to have more than one family member receiving communication, please send me (Diane ) updates or additional email addresses. If you know anyone in our neighborhood or community who would like to get our Lynndale news, I can add them to our “Community” distribution list. We would love to have people know all the great things happening on our campus – the wider our connection, the better. The Lion’s Roar is designed to be a friendly and comfortable way for families to stay on top of all the great things happening here at Lynndale. It’s nothing “official,” unless I specifically copy a message from Mr. Fulford or Mr. Goodsky that they have asked me to send on their behalf. We want you to know that this is YOUR school! I’m working on updating the website, but please be patient with me; there have been a lot of changes this fall. Keep watching the website, as new information is posted weekly. END OF DAY ROUTINE - A GAZILLION THANKS… *We very much appreciate all of you for helping keep our Lions safe during afternoon pickup. Just a reminder that we are having all our teachers walk their students out to the parent pick up area and the buses. We have a designated parent pick up area in front of the school near the benches. Parents…please do not wait outside of the classrooms. This is for the safety of the children and to keep the traffic flowing. *If you are using the “drive through” method, just pull up and wait for your child. PLEASE do not abandon your car. *We are also asking that if there is a change in your transportation plans, you notify the school first thing in the morning so that we have adequate time to make the appropriate adjustments. PLEASE try not to wait until the end of the day to make the request unless it’s an emergency situation. *To expedite the after school bus loading and efficient drop-off at bus stops, PLEASE have your child know their plan for the day (and let teachers know of any changes), and remind them that it’s important to pay attention to when the bus gets to their stop.
