Program Description The Musculoskeletal Fellowship is a one-year clinical and research program for one or two fellows. The fellow participates in an intensive training program in musculoskeletal imaging which includes plain films, arthrography, discography, nerve blocks, vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty, spineoplasty, and tumor ablations, percutaneous bone biopsy, and CT and MRI of the spine and extremities. Educational opportunities are enhanced, by weekly film MRI and plain films review conferences, and bi-weekly didactic conferences. The fellow participates in monthly sports medicine, wrist, foot and ankle and spine conferences, as well as in frequent rheumatology and orthopedic clinical rounds. Members of the musculoskeletal section are active in clinical and laboratory research projects in the fields of musculoskeletal MRI, radiologic-orthopedic-correlation in bone and joint abnormalities, and bone marrow disorders. Fellowship training is also enhanced by daily teaching rounds. Our fellowship is designed to provide training in state-of-the-art clinical diagnostic imaging. For those individuals interested in academic careers or considering academic careers, the fellowship can be designed with that purpose in mind. Academic fellowships will provide opportunity for research activities (both clinical and laboratory), publication, presentations, and teaching at both medical student and resident levels. This fellowship is directed toward clinical activities with the opportunity to participate in additional investigative studies. The fellow's duties include attending, teaching, and working conferences in the disciplines of rheumatology, orthopedics, metabolic bone disease, tumor imaging, and sports medicine; preparing weekly and monthly conferences covering conventional radiography, CT scanning and MRI as related to the musculoskeletal system; performing and supervising arthrography and biopsies; and active participation in clinical projects. The fellowship is comprised of one to two fellows per year. The fellowship is designed to produce specialized, academically oriented musculoskeletal radiologists with superb clinical skills. We are responsible for all imaging examinations and interventional procedures related to the musculoskeletal system. Goals of the Fellowship: A. To provide training in all aspects of musculoskeletal imaging: 1. Image interpretation – the fellow should be competent in the interpretation of all imaging modalities utilized in the evaluation of musculoskeletal disorders including MRI, CT, radiography and ultrasound 2. Intervention – the fellow should be able to perform arthrography, therapeutic joint injections, spinal injections for pain management, vertebral body reconstruction, image-guided biopsy, CT guided radiofrequency ablation of osteoid osteoma B. To provide the opportunity and resources to conduct research. Graduates of the fellowship have successfully pursued careers in academia and private practice. Responsibilities The fellow is expected to: 1. Function as an integral member of the musculoskeletal division including image interpretation and procedures. They should be able to serve as consultants to the referring clinicians. The level of responsibility afforded the fellow increases as the year progresses. 2. Participate in the educational responsibilities of the division, such as case-based conferences and didactic lectures. 3. Prepare weekly division conferences. 4. Complete a research or educational project. Program Description This one-year fellowship has a broad, in-depth curriculum that covers all fundamentals of musculoskeletal imaging. The program is designed to provide participants with clinical and academic subspecialty training while working closely with experts in the imaging and interventional aspects of musculoskeletal radiology. Curriculum Clinical Training Advanced training in all aspects of musculoskeletal radiology in both outpatient and inpatient settings, including experience with magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography. Rotations The fellowship rotations are variable and can be modified to meet individual interests and career goals. Required rotations include: MR imaging CT imaging Musculoskeletal interventional procedures Spine imaging/intervention Didactic Training Clinical conferences, seminars, small discussion groups, journal clubs and one-on-one instruction are all an integral part of the Musculoskeletal Radiology Fellowship. Conferences include: Orthopedic tumor (weekly) Daily orthopedic conferences Monthly Rheumatology conferences Research Training Research opportunities are outstanding. Fellows are required to participate in one or more clinical research projects with the consulting staff, and prepare one manuscript for publication and presentation at a national meeting. Additionally, fellows are required to prepare and present a one-hour didactic lecture.
