Centre for Ambulatory Health Services (CAHS – King Street East)
St. Joseph’s Centre for Ambulatory Health Services (formerly St. Joseph’s Community Health Centre) is a
pioneer in Ontario’s health care system. It is a hospital-sponsored outpatient facility supporting the
service needs of the residents of Stoney Creek, East Hamilton, and the broader Hamilton Region.
CAHS brings health care into the community with a variety of services and programs from sports
medicine and eye care to pain management. The Urgent Care Centre, for non-life threatening
emergencies, is the region's busiest emergency service next to St. Joseph's Emergency Department.
CAHS also offers health education ranging from asthma management to nutrition for diabetes. Two new
centres broaden the services at CAHS: the Women's Health Centre offers many options for the maturing
woman, including the Ontario Breast Screening Program, and the Surgery Centre provides day surgeries,
such as cataract removal.
Centre for Mountain Health Services
(CMHS – West 5th)
St. Joseph’s Centre for Mountain Health Services (formerly the Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital) is home to
the regional specialized Mental Health Services for Central South. It is a specialized tertiary care centre
dedicated to the service of individuals suffering with a severe mental illness, their families and their
community. It is located in Hamilton and serves the city of Hamilton and the regions of Halton, Brant,
Niagara, and Haldimand.
III.
OVERVIEW
Elective Students will be involved in the reviewing of multimodality images from the Charlton Site, CMHS
and CAHS.
Elective Students will have to schedule a time in Computed Tomography (CT), Fluoroscopy,
angiography/interventional, Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Mammography to
broaden your scope of knowledge of the procedures and examinations performed in the Department of
Diagnostic Imaging.
Elective Students will assess patient care by following designated patients from “check-in” (ie when the
patient arrives in the department) through image acquisition, the role of the technologist, and image
interpretation by the radiologist.
The Elective Student will learn to assess the impact of diagnostic imaging on patient management.

CORA – the Centre of Radiological Anatomy, under the Directorship of Dr. Julian Dobranowski, is a unique interactive learning environment located on the 3rd Floor of the Juravinski Innovation Tower. Students are encouraged
to work through a number of specific modules and are expected to complete test evaluations upon completion of
each module. There is an extensive set of modules geared toward chest imaging.
To access the CORA lab, please contact Sue Wagland – DI Administrative Assistant, ext. 33308.

MEDICAL GRAND ROUNDS – WED
Presentations by a variety of specialties and sub-specialties, addressing a wide range of cases of clinical
interest and new developments.
RADIOLOGY RESIDENT ROUNDS – M & T (12 noon) W – 7:30am
These rounds are conducted by the Staff Radiologist scheduled for General/ICU Reporting. They are geared toward
Radiology Residents, however, medical students are expected to attend. The exact time for these rounds can
fluctuate depending on the radiologist’s workload. Students are advised to check with the residents.
CLINICAL TEACHING UNIT (CTU) ROUNDS – THU – 12 noon
Radiology Rounds have been organized for the Clinical Teaching Unit at St. Joseph’s Healthcare. They take place
each Thursday in CORA and are conducted on alternating weeks by Dr. Gerry Cox (Respirology) and Dr. Julian
Dobranowski (Chief DI).
The curriculum of the rounds is to review the radiological anatomy of the thorax and to introduce concepts of
pathology as related to the thorax and to introduce concepts of pathology related to the thorax. The curriculum of the
rounds rotates with two or three presentations on normal anatomy and the remainder focusing on image-based
pathology. The students are also introduced into concepts of neuro imaging as they apply to internal medicine.
OTHER
Students enrolled in the Medical Student Elective Program are welcome to attend educational rounds of
interest at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton or Hamilton Health Sciences.
V.
RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
There are many opportunities for students to become involved in research or educational projects in
Diagnostic Imaging, including creation of radiological anatomy modules, Case Reports, Perspective
Studies and Posters. Interested students are asked to notify the Electives Coordinator,
(Dr. Judith Coret-Simon) or the Director of CORA – the Centre of Radiological Anatomy.
(Dr. Julian Dobranowski).
The McMaster University Imaging Research Centre/Brain Body Institute located at St. Joseph's
Healthcare, has a CT-PET scanner and a 3T MRI scanner, offering excellent opportunities for research.
VI.
EVALUATION
Following completion of the two-week elective period, students will be assessed by the Elective Student
Coordinator, based upon objectives achieved and any areas requiring improvement or further study.
The student will be required to complete a 20-question quiz related to the student’s understanding of the
physics, radiation exposure, patient perspective, role of technologist and supporting staff as detailed in
the McMaster Medical Student Radiology curriculum.
