Welcome to the Olathe Medical Center
We are pleased that you and your physician have chosen Olathe Medical Center for your child’s upcoming procedure. We encoura ge
you and your child to ask questions. Let the staff know of any special needs your child may have. We want your child’s visit to be as
comfortable as possible. An Ambulatory Surgery Center Nurse will be calling 2 - 3 days before your child’s procedure to review the
pre-procedure instructions, and to obtain a past medical history. Please have the following information available to share with her
when she calls:
1)
List of your child’s allergies.
2)
List of any over-the-counter or prescription medications your child is taking.
3)
List of the surgeries and procedures your child has had.
4)
Insurance card information.
Your child will need to be pre-registered for his/her procedure so please call 913-791-4418 anytime between the hours of
8:00 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday at least 1 week prior to your procedure.
If you would like to visit with an anesthesiologist before the day of your child’s procedure, anesthesia pre-op interviews are available
Monday through Friday from 1:30 to 3:30 P.M. Just check in at the front desk of the Ambulatory Surgery Center and one of our anesthesiologists will be happy to visit with you and your child. No appointment is needed.
Important Pre-procedure Instructions for Children having Surgery under General Anesthesia
The following instructions are designed to provide your child with a safe, comfortable surgical and anesthesia experience. Please follow all instructions completely.
1)
Your child’s scheduled surgery time is subject to change. We will call you after 2:00 P.M. the day before surgery to
notify you of any time changes.
2)
Your child may not have anything to eat after midnight on the night before surgery. However, your child may have clear liquids,
and clear liquids only, up to 4 hours before the procedure. If breast feeding, the child may have breast milk 6 hours before the
procedure.
3)
Have your child shower or bathe the night before or morning of the procedure. If your child wears dark nail polish, please remove it from one fingernail. Braid or tie back long hair.
4)
If your child has any change in his or her health before the date of the procedure, notify your child’s surgeon. Report any signs
or symptoms such as: fever, sore throat, or other infection, rash, scab or wound near the surgical site, etc. Your child’s procedure may be postponed.
5)
Have your child wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that is easy to get off and on. A gown will be provided.
6)
Please leave all valuables at home, i.e., jewelry, including body piercings.
7)
A parent or legal guardian must accompany the child and remain available in the ASC throughout the procedure.
8)
You must arrange for a responsible adult to drive your child home and stay with him/her overnight after the procedure, unless
your child has a local anesthetic only. For small children, we recommend two (2) adults to accompany them during the drive
home - one to care for the child and the other to drive.
9)
Pediatric Pre-op Tour - Every Wednesday evening at 5:00 P.M., the Ambulatory Surgery Center has a Pediatric Pre-Op Tour
for children having surgery. During the party, the parents and child are provided information and education about the surgical
experience, along with a tour of the facility. To make reservations, please call 913-791-4442, Option 2, between the hours of
8:30 A.M. and 5:00 P.M., Monday through Friday.

Ambulatory Surgery Center located on the first floor of the second Doctor’s Building (furthest building west of the Medical Center). An
Ambulatory Surgery Center Nurse will let you know what time to arrive. It is very important that you arrive promptly so that there is
adequate time to prepare your child for his or her procedure.
